Claire Killian, Watertown-Mayer senior wing, scored her 2,000th career point on January 14 of this year—ironically, in one of just 2 losses the Royals (now 19-2) have suffered this year. She scored 19 in a 67-62 loss at Eden Valley-Watkins. Eleven days earlier, I saw her score 30 at Heritage Christian in an 80-55 win. She scored 24 the other night in another of the Royals bigger games this year, a 71-68 win over New London-Spicer in 2 OT. A loss in that game would have dropped the Royals into a 1st place tie with New London in the Wright County West, which I imagine was more important to Killian than her 2,000th (or, now, approximately 2,135) points.
The Royals and Killian have 6 more regular season games remaining before the start of sectional playoffs. If the Royals are able to win the Section 5AA title and a trip to the state tournament, which they’re favored to do, at the rate she’s going, Killian might go into the tournament with a total of about 2,330 points.
Alexandria Teammates and Classmates Exceed 1,000 Points
Alex coach Wendy Kohler sent us a note the other day letting us (and you) know that senior guards Macy Hatlestad and Kendall Kohler both scored their 1,000th point earlier in the season. We’ll have a separate profile of Hatlestad and Kohler and of their accomplishments, thanks to coach Kohler for providing her scouting report of her 2 stars.
Liv Korngable Finally Returns from Knee Injury
Every knee is different. Hatlestad has rehabbed one knee and hopes to be back from another knee injury in 6 weeks. Rochester Mayo star Liv Korngable was out almost 10 months and is still playing “limited minutes.” But she's back. She debuted at Winona 3 weeks ago, scoring just 3 points in “limited minutes.” But Mayo goit an upset win 47-40 as Siennah Stamness scored 18 points. She (Korngable) sat out against Faribault and Mayo lost 30-28 as Stamness scored 14.
Mayo beat arch-rival John Marshall 54-40 as Korngable scored 15 points and Stamness 10. Then, again playing “limited minutes,” she scored 10 as Mayo edged Mankato East 50-46.
Kenzie Rensch (2018) to Play in NSIC, Teammates to MIAC
Kenzie Rensch gave her verbal commitment to Augustana last week. The Hutchinson junior guard made her decision last Friday night after the Tigers game at Holy Family. There were several other NSIC schools that were interested in Rensch but “Sioux Falls was a perfect fit from the day they made the offer in September.” All of her dad’s (Hutch assistant coach Jeff Rensch) family is out in the Sioux Falls area, so she will have “a ton” of family support. In fact, Kenzie was born in Sioux Falls. “It’s crazy how that came full circle.” She also wants to be a nurse, so Sioux Falls is also a perfect place for her from an academic and career perspective. “And it is a smaller school with a great coaching staff and a winning tradition.” She is “thrilled” with this outcome of her recruiting process. Congrats to Kenzie.
Plus Hutch seniors (2017) Morgan Kurth and Mackenzie Dettman going to St. Kate’s.
Lydia Rutten Get’s Number 2,000
New York Mills combo guard Lydia Rutten was at 1,982 points going into Tuesday night’s game at Menahga. Since she has been scoring over 20 ppg combined over the past 2 seasons now, it is very possible that she made it to the 2,000 market. Menahga won the game 75-66, but I have not been able to find a box score, so I don’t know if she made it or not. But, if not, it will happen very soon. She also surpassed 1,000 rebounds earlier this year on January 3 at home against Pillager.
If the Eagles get to the Section 6A final, at the rate she’s going, Rutten might have around 2,200 points after the 6A playoffs.
Rutten is headed to the U. of North Dakota to play volleyball, and she is in the 1000 kill/1000 dig club, too.
Danielle Schaub Scores Number 1,000
If anyone reading this is a basketball player under 5-foot-6 and you wonder if you can be successful in this game, well, Danielle Schaub is your role model. The 5-5 Park Center senior scored her average of12 points in a 70-45 win over Osseo Tuesday night to cross the 1,000 point threshold.
Kristin Scott Scores Her 2,000th Point, then Twists an Ankle
Math was never my best subject but let me see if I can figure this out. On January 15, we were told that Kristin Scott, Kasson-Mantorville’s 6-2 senior post and Ms. Basketball contender, was at 1,974 points, 26 short of 2,000, and that she had exceeded 1,000 rebounds the previous week against Kenyon-Wanamingo.
Kristin then scored 23 points against Waseca (with 16 rebounds and 7 blocks) in a 50-48 OT win, which would have left her 3 points short of 2K. She then scored 23 in a 73-35 win over Cannon Falls, 15 (with 11 boards) in a 47-43 win over Hayfield, and 41 in an 88-53 win over Triton. A conservation guess-timate would be that she has exceeded 2,000 by now, though we haven’t heard back from the KoMets to that effect.
Tuesday night, however, Scott went out with an ankle injury very early in the game and never returned, yet the KoMets edged arch-rival Goodhue 52-49.
If Scott is able to come back from her injury right away, and if the KoMets win the Section 1AAA title and play 3 state tournament games, that would be 13 more games before her high school career is over. At the rate she’s going, that could mean about 2,250 career points by the time she’s all done.
