Continue ReadingCarrollton and Jerseyville made their league debut tonight and their stars were on full display. For the Carrollton Lady Hawks senior guards Hannah Krumwiede and Marley Mullink played very well. Both showed the ability to hit the outside shot and take the ball to the basket. Krumwiede is the seasoned leader of the team but the ability of Mullink to score will take the pressure off her on offense. With the addition of returning sophomore post player Ava Uhles the Lady Hawks have an outstanding nucleus they can count on next season. I am looking forward to seeing this team a few more times this summer.
For Jerseyville it was more of what we already knew but with a twist. Junior Abby Manns showed the ability to be an elite defender. She is long and athletic and put that to use tonight. Coach Strebel used her on the opposing point guard and she forced many turnovers and consistently made it difficult for her opponents to get into their offensive sets. Sophomore Clare Breden continues to show the ability to score at all 3 levels. She was impressive finishing in the lane while also finding space to get off the outside shot. When she did draw enough of the defenses attention that the pass was the best move she was able and willing to find her open teammates. The inside players did an excellent job of relocating to the open spot for layups and Manns was deadly from the 3 point line.
The host Crossover select team coached by Darnell Marshall continues to show some outstanding young talent. Adrenna Snipes continues to give opposing defenses fits with her ability to get into the lane and find the best play for her team. She is just the smart point guard every team needs. This week it became more obvious that Alyssa Powell has the opportunity to be special. She is a strong player and at around 5’11 she can play down in the post and is willing to fight for good position, but at the same time she flashes a high level of athleticism that shows she can defend any position on the floor. She may have a future as a wing player as she improves her ball handling and offensive moves facing the basket. She has shown signs of a capable outside shot that will make her hard to guard with the speed and power she already has.
Next week we are looking forward to a Carrollton vs Jerseyville matchup pitting these two strong guard tandems against each other.
