The talent of this group is starting to get noticed as Coach Silvey is fielding calls from D1 teams starting to inquire about the talent they are seeing. The team won their pool and the cross pool game to finish 4-0 in pool play, despite most of the team being 14U playing up into 15U. They ran into a strong team in the Sophomore Showcase bracket and bowed out in the Elite 8.
Katelynne Roberts the 6’2 2021 post from Edwardsville had an excellent week. Katelynne was in double figures scoring in all 4 pool games and according to Coach Silvey she was a force down low. She was an excellent rebounder and either blocked or influenced many shots in the paint. She has a high upside and should have an opportunity to earn some minutes for the Edwardsville varsity in her sophomore campaign.
Macy Silvey was again a consistent force for the Blue Star team. While she may be best at scoring the ball, her strength and ball handling really helps when the other teams bring the pressure. Macy has a good feel for the game and can function well in the high paced games you see on the circuit. She scored in the 8-10 point range in the pool play games and hit 4 shots from behind the arc in the bracket game. She is clearly one to watch as she is already a good size at 5’9 going into her freshman year.
Maura Niemeier from Bethalto is a defensive force off the bench for this group. Coach Silvey calls her one of the quickest players he has had the opportunity to coach. She is agile and quick side to side so she is hard to get around and has done a great job of taking teams out of their offense by hounding the point guards. She is coming into the strong Civic Memorial program and sounds the kind of player that Coach Denney loves to have.
Araina Bennett continues to show the high ceiling that exists for her potential. On her worst days she reminds you of Dennis Rodman with her will and determination to get every rebound and play tough defense. She can run the floor and shows a growing offensive game that on her best days make her look like a force to be watched closely over the next 4 years at Edwardsville. At 5’11 she has the size and the athletic ability to be a wing in college, but,she needs to continue to develop her ball handling and shot. If she continues to grow there is no limit to what she can be.
The 2021 group will not play in any major events until the Elite Octoberfest event September 29-30 in Chicago. This group is one that the College Coaches have on their radar and with good reason.
