Continue ReadingWaseca finished the 2017-2018 regular season with a record of 23-4. The Bluejays lost in their section championship game to Mankato West, and ended the year ranked as the 10th best team in AAA by Prep Girls Hoops. A big reason for the team’s success was Madison Gehloff.
Gehloff averaged 18 points per game as a junior, and is Prep Girls Hoops’ 30th ranked player in the class of 2019. Gehloff is a strong guard, who is at her best when attacking the rim. She is an outstanding defender, and is a solid rebounding guard. We asked Gehloff what she has been working on throughout the summer and she told us, “I’ve been focusing on being more physical in the paint and finishing through contact at the rim. Also, I’ve been working on my left hand.”
Gehloff and her MN Rise 2019 teammates finished the season with a remarkable 33-7 record.Madison spent the grassroots season with Minnesota Rise. It was her first year with the team, and she described the experience as, “Nothing short of amazing.” The Rise 2019’s were one of the more surprising teams in Minnesota this past summer. Outstanding seasons from Gehloff, Joey Batt (New Ulm) and Caitlin Rorman (Blue Earth), among others were key to the team’s success. The Dan Wolfe coached squad had a mid-season 17 game winning streak, and won 5 tournaments throughout the summer. When speaking about the team, Gehloff said, “All the friendships I made with my teammates is something I’ll cherish. A lot of them are conference foes as well so it’ll be lots of fun to be playing against them.”
Gehloff has set the bar high for herself and her Bluejay teammates going into her senior season at Waseca. As for individual goals, she told PGH that, “One of my goals for myself is to reach 2,000 points which might be a bit of a stretch but I like a challenge.” She talked a bit about how last season ended, and the team’s motivation going into this winter. “Losing in the section final last year left a sour taste in our mouth and we are using that as motivation in all that we do. Next year our goal is to get back up to the state tournament and make some noise there. Also, we plan on keeping our defensive identity and continuing to shut down other team’s offensive game.”
Madison plans to continue her basketball career after high school, and has been in contact with a long list of Division 3 colleges. She’s been trying to work visits into her busy schedule, and said she plans to continue to check out more schools throughout the fall. PGH asked Gehloff what she thinks will ultimately help her decide her future college. She said, “My main factors when picking a school will be what the school has to offer for academics and what kind of team and coaches I’d be working with.”
Gehloff hopes to make her college commitment by the end of the basketball season. Whichever college is lucky enough to receive a commitment from Madison will be getting a great player from a great program.
