Continue ReadingIndiana is typically known for great guard play, but the Class of 2020 in Indiana is very thin on quality point guard depth. Because of this, the talented young ladies below should draw more than their fair share of college interest in the next year and a half. In this article I go a bit more in-depth at what the Top-10 point guards in Indiana’s 2020 Class are made of.
- Dash Shaw, 2020, 5-6 G, Gary West Side Leadership Academy
Dash grew up in the shadow of Dana Evans (Gary West Side 2017), so it’s no surprise that she has somewhat modeled her game after Dana. Dash is wiry strong, athletic, and she has very good speed and quickness. She can score it at all levels, and she’s a threat who opponents hope to just contain, not stop completely. She has ball skills, and she can pass it, but she’s a scorer at heart. She’s also a presence at the defensive end of the floor. In 2017-2018 she averaged 22.2 points, 3.7 assists, and 4.8 steals.
- Kristian Young, 2020, 5-4 PG, Lawrence North H.S.
Kristian Young of Lawrence North
Kristian is an absolute jet. She flies around the floor in all directions, and she causes havoc for opposing teams. She has track speed and quickness, but I think once she understands how to pick her spots more and not just go 100 MPH all the time, she will be that much more lethal. She can shoot it a little from the perimeter, but she’s best getting into the lane and collapsing defenses. She’s also a very good on-ball defender, but she has the tools to become the best defender in Indiana’s 2020 Class.
- Jaci Jones, 2020, 5-4 PG, Fort Wayne South Side H.S.
It seems like everyone I talk to who has seen Jaci play shares the same opinion of her, the same opinion I have of her, and that’s that she is one of the toughest, grittiest, feistiest players in this class. She isn’t very tall, but she is strong for her size, she has good speed and quickness, and she won’t get rattled. She has a veteran’s savvy and knows how to run a team, but she can score it a little bit too. She’s also a capable defensive player. She verbally committed to Detroit Mercy during the spring.
- Ally Lorntz, 2020, 5-5 PG, Angola H.S.
You will start to see a theme here with a lot of these guards listed, but Ally is another quick, feisty point guard who just knows how to play. She is a wiry strong athlete, and I remember her always playing at a high level, since I first saw her in 8th grade. She can hit shots outside, she can get into the lane and cause problems, but she’s also a willing distributor. Defensively, she always seems to have active feet and active hands, and she can be a pest on opposing ball-handlers.
- Maya Chandler, 2020, 5-7 PG, Triton Central H.S.
Maya Chandler of Triton Central
Maya had a very good spring and summer, and she’s starting to see it manifest by way of college interest. She has really nice length, she’s wiry strong, and she has a good toughness to her. She is a coach’s daughter, and it’s easy to see that basketball awareness when she plays. She is very good getting to the basket and finishing, plus she has a nice mid-range game. Once she’s consistent outside, I think she could possibly see some Division I interest. She is one of those kids who just grinds each time out.
- Ilani Williams-Harris, 2020, 5-7 G, Covenant Christian School (Indianapolis)
I have only seen Ilani a couple of times, both in the past six months, so admittedly I need to see more of her very soon. What I do know, though, is that she is long, athletic, and she has very good speed and quickness. Each time I’ve seen her, she has been a to-the-rim scorer who loves to attack the paint. She’s great in transition, and she can be very feisty at the defensive end of the floor. She did pick up a variety of interest this spring and summer, including an offer from the University of Indianapolis.
- Lexie Green, 2020, 5-7 PG, Southport H.S.
Lexie has been trending up, really over the last year or so, and I can’t help but think a lot of that has to do with her physical growth. She is still a little thin, but she’s taller and much stronger than she was as a freshman, and that has paid dividends. She is very long, fluid, and smooth with the basketball. She glides through defenses, and she’s able to find open teammates for scores. She can also keep defenses honest with her perimeter shot, and she’s a good angular defender who uses her length well at that end.
- Kyrstin Green, 2020, 5-5 PG, Lafayette Jefferson H.S.
Kyrstin Green of Lafayette Jefferson
Kyrstin is an absolute water bug, and she’s probably as similar to Kristian Young (above) as anyone on this list. Kyrstin is quick-on-quick with good end-to-end speed. She is an in-your-face defender who causes a lot of problems at that end of the floor. Offensively she is a facilitator first, and good at breaking down defenses, but she’s been much better over the last year or so at knocking down open jumpers and making defenses pay for disrespecting her offensive game.
- Allison Bosse, 2020, 5-6 G, Brownsburg H.S.
Allison is a kid who I thought really stood out all spring and summer, as evidenced by my inclusion of her in a couple of articles already. I really like her versatility as both a capable game manager at point guard, and her ability to really shoot it outside and score the basketball at all levels when she plays off the ball. She is fairly strong for her size, tough-nosed, and she brings a lot of big-game experience to the table.
- Bayleigh Runner, 2020, 5-7 PG, Hamilton Heights H.S.
Bayleigh is a long, fluid, and fairly smooth point guard who just continues to get better and better with added strength and physical maturity. She could still be a little more physical, but I think it will come in time. She is a capable perimeter shooter, and she’s good gliding to the basket, but she is a true point guard who tries to incorporate her teammates all the time. Defensively, I think she does a nice job of using her length and taking good angles to the ball.
2020 Point Guards 11-20:
