There are girls with Division I offers, and there are several girls who might still be “sleeping” a bit in terms of their recruiting. In this article I will go a little more in-depth as to what the Top-5 prospects in this position group possess for the next level.
- Jayla Smith, 2021, 5-9 G, Lawrence North H.S.
Jayla is the kid in 2021 who the state will get to know really soon. When I first saw her in December, she was about a 5-5 to 5-6 kid playing Junior Varsity ball for Lawrence North. By the end of the season, she was a regular contributor on Varsity. Now she’s pushing 5-10, she’s extremely long, fluid, and smooth, she’s just very thin. She’s a deadly 3-point shooter, and she has ball skills to where she can play some point guard at times. She needs to gain a lot of strength, but she might grow to be 6-0 tall. She has already drawn multiple Division I offers because of her potential / upside.
- Ally Becki, 2021, 5-7 G, Brownsburg H.S.
Zakia Rasheed of Bishop Chatard
Ally is an absolute joy to watch because not only does she have skill and ability, but she also always competes at both ends of the floor. She stepped into a good Brownsburg lineup last year as a Freshman and led them in scoring. She can attack and finish, she has a nice mid-range game, and she’s a capable perimeter shooter. She can also play point guard, and she is pretty efficient with the ball, though she could learn to change speeds a little better. Defensively she is just gritty on the ball. She has some similarities to 2019’s Maddie Nolan (Zionsville).
- Zakia Rasheed, 2021, 5-8 G, Bishop Chatard H.S.
Zakia is a strong, physical guard who does a variety of things well. She’s a nice on-the-floor athlete who attacks the basket and finishes through contact. She has also gained a reputation as a very good perimeter shooter. Where she has probably improved the most, is as a ball-handler and game manager. Ultimately, I think she’s better off the ball scoring it, but her versatility has already earned her multiple Division I offers. She recently transferred from Avon to Bishop Chatard, where she should pair nicely with Moira McGinley (below).
- Katie Burton, 2021, 5-8 G, Fishers H.S.
Katie Burton of Fishers
Katie is definitely the “microwave” of this group, because she can heat up quickly. When she gets a rhythm, she can put up 30+ points in the blink of an eye. She has good length, end-to-end speed, and nice athleticism. She’s also stronger than she might look, and she finishes through contact well. Plus she’s someone who I think hits odd-angled, off-balance shots as well or better than anyone I can recall recently. She has good ball skill, and she’s a capable distributor, but you want this kid looking to score it on every catch.
- Pa’Shence Walker, 2021, 5-8 G, Martinsville H.S.
If there’s a kid who has been somewhat overlooked, it’s Pa’Shence. She did not play grassroots ball this season, so no one really got the opportunity to evaluate her. She has good length, fluidity, and athleticism…just a nice all-around smoothness to her athletically. She is more of a straight-line attacker right now, and she glides through defenses, but her perimeter shot it starting to come around. She’s also a versatile defender who could become elite at that end of the floor. She’s the younger sister of 2018 Indiana All-Star Kayana Traylor (Purdue).
