Sunday marked the first week of the Breakdown Fall League, so there was absolutely nothing tangible on the line when Hopkins and Lakeville North hooked up for some running time basketball at Hopkins. Don’t tell that to the kids on the floor. They went at it like it was February, and the ending couldn’t have been more dramatic. After trailing in the opening half, the Royals came back to seize the advantage. Hopkins was up two when the Panthers’ Lauren Jensen knocked down a pretty 15-foot pull-up jumper on the baseline – stop us if you’ve heard that before from Lauren – to tie the game at 45 with just 8 seconds remaining.

The Hopkins outlet pass landed in the hands of Dlayla Chakolis, who is #13 among Minnesota’s top seniors and has a college commitment to Division 1 Hampton University in Virginia. Chakolis ran the length of the floor like a fullback, plowing into a phalanx of Lakeville defenders and drawing the foul before time expired.
