Triad was up 4 at half and down 2 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Alton Marquette was able to carve out a 4 point lead with about 2 minutes left, but did not score again. Triad finished on a 6 run to take the win 45-43.
- An old lesson was re- learned in this game. Free throws win games. Triad was 17/21 in the second half and 22/30 for the game. Alton Marquette was 0/4 in the second half and 4/15 for the game. Heather Rood came back from a knee injury that sidelined her at mid season last year to go 11/15 from the line. Ali Barisch, who led Triad in scoring in Rood’s absence last year went 8/10 from the line. Triad made 2 field goals in the 3rd quarter and 2 in the 4th. In the end, that was all they needed because they converted at the free throw lne.
- Another lesson you hear when you are around this game is that guards, and especially experienced guards, win games. Barisch and Rood proved this theory on Wednesday night. They have both played many minutes of basketball for Triad and it paid off on Wednesday night. Rood finished with 15 points and Barisch 17 to lead the Lady Knights to victory.
- If you didn’t know before now you should know, Adrenna Snipes can play basketball. The 5’6 freshman guard from Alton Marquette did everything she could to lead her team to a victory. In her debut she had 20 points/5 rebounds/5 assists and 8 steals. Unfortunately a couple of key free throws did not go in for her late in the game. All in all considering she was laid up with the flu just 24 hours earlier, she put on a show.
- Triad will cause problems for a smaller teams like Alton Marquette with their size. They have some height and some other girls that are not as tall but are strong and tough. They will run Caleigh Miller, Krista Cochran, Molly Suess, Ella Manso and Alyssa Powell at you over and over. Those girls were not the leading scorers in this game but they controlled the paint. They rebounded well on both ends and did not allow Alton Marquette to get the ball inside.
- Alton Marquette is small and they are young. Coach Lee Green played his 3 freshman big minutes. They will pressure you all night long and force you into mistakes. Kamryn Fandrey and Abby Williams will team with Snipes to give the Explorers a good future. This team isn’t looking to the future and they fully expected to find a way to beat the more experienced Lady Knights team. They will go back to practice and work on getting better. They are a fun team to watch.
This was a tight game all night long. If you were there to see it you got your a good value for the price of admission. Now the two teams go separate ways and will travel two different paths. Triad will take their experience and hope to have a great season and make strides in the tough Mississippi Valley conference. Alton Marquette will keep trying to mold their younger team into a contender for the conference crown in the Prairie State conference.
