- The Explorers have gone young and it seems to be working so far. Coach Green is starting 3 freshman and a sophomore. Payton Connors a senior and lone returning starter handles the other spot. The 3 freshman led the team in scoring for the game. Kamryn Fandrey had 12 points, Adrenna Snipes and Abby Williams each had 9.
- Aubrey Hubbard had been lights out the first two games for Waterloo. The junior transfer made 5 and 6 shots from 3 in the first two games. Both games Waterloo faced a zone and she was able to get open shots. Against the Alton Marquette man to man she could not find those looks. Aubrey ended up with 2 points for the game. In the first two games Waterloo made 14 shots from the 3 and in this game they were held to 1. This was a big key to the victory.
- Alton Marquette employs a full court pressing defense that is a key part of what they do as a team. This press was very effective against Waterloo forcing them in to 26 turnovers. From the early stages of the game Waterloo had trouble getting the ball over the time line. Even when they did get it over the half court line they could not get into their offense. Kamryn Fandrey had 5 steals and Adrenna Snipes 3. Fandrey spent most of the night on Hubbard and held her in check.
- Waterloo senior guard Haley Aldridge did not have her shot during this game and finished with 3 points. I really liked what I saw from her for the tourney. In this game she had 6 rebounds from her guard spot and played good defense. She did a good job of attacking the basket on offense but could not get anything to fall. Haley was the leading scorer returning for Waterloo and should be the #2 behind Hubbard this year.
- Alton Marquette shot well from outside in this game, hitting seven 3 pointers. If they can do that consistently they will be tough to beat. Abby Williams hit 1, Emma Nicholson hit 1, Carmen Kline hit 2, Kamryn Fandrey hit 2 and Grace Dennis hit 1. The Explorers are creating offense off their defense and by Snipes getting into the lane. If they can hit from behind the 3 point line it will be an added benefit.
Coach Lee Green has rebuilt the team after losing 6 seniors. This group is young and fast and fun to watch. They will live and die on their defense. They will no doubt hold most teams down, but can they rebound and score. If they can, you may see them hoist some more trophies in February.
