Get your rest on Friday night ‘cuz it’s going to be a long day. For the second straight weekend there is a plethora of basketball on tap this Saturday as December kicks off with the Breakdown Tip Off Classic. This event always offers one of the strongest fields in high school basketball, and this year the folks at Breakdown Sports have outdone themselves. The Tip Off Classic features:

  • 17 games – First is at 9 a.m., last tipoff is at 9:00 p.m.
  • 24 ranked teams
  • Three of the four #1-ranked teams: Hopkins (4A), DeLaSalle (3A), Minnehaha Academy (2A)
  • 11 of the top 15 teams in 4A
  • The top 6 teams in 3A
  • Three defending state champions: Eastview (4A), Cooper (3A), Sauk Centre (2A)
  • A whole lot of great basketball

5 FACES YOU MAY NOT KNOW

It’s impossible to watch every game, although we’ll do our darndest to check in on all of them. I have already seen 11 of the 34 teams this week, so we’ll try and get a good look at the other 23 on Saturday. Here are some players to watch that you may not have seen before.

Jordyn Hilgemann, sophomore guard/forward, Marshall – Rising star in the class of 2021

Adeline Kent, freshman guard, Becker – Opened the season with a 24-point performance.

Myra Moorjani, freshman guard, Eden Prairie – Led EP to a comeback win over Park Center Wednesday.

Alyssa Peterson, senior guard, Menahga (UM-Crookston) – Experienced floor leader with great skills

Taylor Woodson, 8th grade forward, Hopkins – You’ve never seen an 8th grader who plays like this.

RECOMMENDED ITINERARY

Breakfast – Crossroads Delicatessen, 2795 Hedberg Drive. It’s just down the street and you’re going to need those carbs!

9:00 a.m. – Alexandria vs DeLaSalle (Main court): Wendy Kohler’s Cardinals are always competitive and junior guard Ella Grove is probably going to have a breakout season. DeLaSalle has a flock of talented youngsters, including forward Mya Williams, who was very good off the bench last weekend.

11:00 a.m. – Waseca vs Simley (East court): Madison Gehloff and Gus Boyer lead the Bluejays against the formidable foursome at Simley. Watch for freshman power forward Champ Danso of the Spartans.

12:45 p.m. – Maple Grove vs Chaska (East court): Standout guards Abby Schulte and Jordan Lamker power the Crimson against freshman sensation Mallory Heyer and her team from Chaska.

2:15 p.m. – A fashionably late lunch at Samba Taste of Brazil, 922 Main Street in downtown Hopkins. It’s short drive and well worth it. If you can’t bear to leave the gym, the sandwiches at the Lindbergh Center concession window are much better than your average gymnasium fare.

4:30 p.m. – St. Michael-Albertville vs Lakeville North (Main court): The loaded STMA Knights with Kendal Cox, Kenzie Kramer, Jadyn Hanson and more face Lauren Jensen and Lakeville North.

6:00 p.m. – Eastview vs Hopkins (Main court): The Big One. A state championship rematch between the precision and poise of Eastview and the speed and skill of Hopkins. An hour of Paige Bueckers is always worth your time.

7:30 p.m. – Holy Angels vs Robbinsdale Cooper (Main court): The new-look Stars are led by sophomore Frankie Vascellaro. They’ll face the high-flying Cooper Hawks led by Aja Wheeler, Kierra Wheeler and Andrea Tribble.
