This ended up being the most exciting game I saw all weekend as this one took an overtime session to decide it with Capital Christian prevailing 68-64.
Chesapeake controlled most of the first three quarters against their much bigger opponents thanks to outstanding contributions from their big 3; sophomores Tamara Stanford and Kayla Cabbagestalk, and senior Trinity Horton. Stanford was on fire from deep and finished with 27 points to lead all scorers. Chesapeake’s lead swelled to 14 at the half, but Capital Christian used their size advantage and some hot shooting from deep to chip away at the lead in the second half. The lead changed hands several times in the last three minutes but a slightly more balanced attack was all the Lady Storm needed to come out on top. Chesapeake only had 3 players score as Cabbagestalk added 21 points and 16 rebounds and Horton added 16 points.
Shanell Haskins, Lor Mputu and Jocelyn Johnson scored 26,14 and 13 points respectively for the winners.
Here is a quick look at some of the performers…
Shanell Haskins, Capital Christian
The senior point guard looks like she is just about all the way back from her injuries and that’s always a good thing. She looked strong and decisive in her moves and got where she wanted to go on the floor. Lafayette is getting a great floor general and scorer.Shanell Haskins
Jocelyn Johnson, Capital Christian
Ms. Johnson is an exceptional athlete with long arms and excellent wing span. She knocked down several long threes and displayed a nice handle. She’s a versatile player with excellent size to excel at the next level.
Tamara Stanford, Chesapeake (BC)
Tamara is an explosive athlete and she excels in the open court. She’s a strong finisher at the rim with a pretty tight handle. She has great upper body strength so she can handle contact well. Her 3 point shot was money as she poured in 27 points.
Kayla Cabbagestalk, Chesapeake (BC)
Kayla, also known as “KC” is a lock down defender. Her offense continues to emerge as she now has a reliable outside shot in addition to several slashing moves that she has perfected. She is developing into one of the best two way players in the area and is only a sophomore. Kayla Cabbagestalk
Trinity Horton, Chesapeake (BC)
The senior guard showed that she is capable of handling some point guard duties as well as playing off the ball. She made some very tough, contested shots in the paint. She has all the tools to be an exceptional defender.
