The Maroons came out with their signature pressuring defense, really forcing Urbana Guards Scott and Jackson to handle the pressure and forcing them into turnovers. Offensively, Urbana struggle early especially leading scorer Chiann Scott.
For, the Maroons it was the opposite they came out with tons of energy and outstanding ball movement and it showed on the court with their lead guards Browning, Willis, Wilson and Gwin living in the paint. They also had their 3-point shot going as well. As Junior Star Guard Chanice Willis got off to a strong start as she controlled the game, she was relentless attacking the basket and knocking down 3’s. Showing off her tremendous athleticism and her improved playmaking skills. Chanice also scored her 1,000th point and becomes the 4th girls’ basketball player to score a 1,000 points in Champaign Central history, also she is the 16th all-time in Boys and Girls basketball in scoring in Champaign Central history. Only a Junior she is poised to keep climbing the charts and break some records. Once the game resumed Chanice and Central outstanding defense was on full display, taking Urbana out of their typical beautiful spread offense.
Central took Urbana out of their gameplan and they shut down Urbana’s lead scorer Scott to her season-low 7 points. Not letting her getting in open looks, Central’s gameplan by their Head Coach Pancho Moore was simply brilliant. Morgan Browning and Aija Gwin were outstanding and Sophmore Center Azaria Smith was outstanding on the defensive side. Central had a great 3rd quarter and put the game away with the final score 66-54.
Takeaways, Central Youth is maturing and this team will be scary come postseason play, most of their players are only Juniors and Sophomores. On the Urbana sid,e they played well but their lack of depth really hurted them, I do expect them to bounce back because both of these teams are in the Decatur Holiday Tournament, which we will be previewing this week.
