The Prospects
Caroline Waite, 5’4 G, 2021 (Ames)
Whoa, she was sensational at the Roundhouse, and the unique backdrop the gym presents certainly did not impact her ability to shoot the ball with great precision. Waite finished the first quarter with seven field goals and 17 points, her ability to shoot it is special, but she was scoring at the rim, too. Despite being the smallest girl on the floor, she was able to corral a board and quickly put in a bucket, plus the foul; she led all players tonight with seven rebounds. Defensively she was aggressive, has good instincts and quick hands. Tonight was Waite’s night.
Ashley Liams, 6’1 F, 2021 (Ames)
Another very impressive sophomore on the Little Cyclones’ roster, what was most striking about Iiams is her versatility. At 6’1, she’s able to play in the post, but she looked best while passing and shooting from the perimeter. She’s able to grab a rebound and go, and defensively she was jumping passing lanes well, as evidenced by her pair of steals.
Kaylee Weaver, 5’5 PG, 2019 (Lincoln)
A veteran presence for the Rails, this senior was a vocal leader all night. Her skill-set most resembles a traditional point guard, she can handle it, plays with savvy and was able to get by opponents with speed and handle.
Erika Canada, 5’6 G, 2019 (Lincoln)
Another veteran presence on the Rails’ squad, Canada was assertive and confident in her offensive skill-set tonight. She’s a capable jump-shooter and got a couple of buckets at the rim, too.
Trinity Cheatom, 5’5 G, 2022 (Lincoln)
Cheatom leads the Rails in scoring as a freshman, and although tonight wasn’t one of her better this season, it was clear to see why she’s been able to have the early-season success. She’s got quick hands on the defensive end, and a decent handle on the offensive end. She’s able to cleverly maneuver and weave through traffic to get to the bucket, where, even at 5’5, she’s able to finish.
Teagan Lipsey, 5’9 G/F, 2020 (Ames)
A lengthy and versatile wing, Lipsey is already decent in the height department, but can play bigger than 5’9 because of a her long wing-span. It also allows her to be troublesome for opponents defensively. Offensively, she was efficient, and all five field goals tonight came at the rim.
Katelyn Courtney, 6’3 C, 2019 (Ames)
At 6-foot-3, Courtney will be taller than most opponents she comes across this season, that sheer size alone makes her an effective player for the Little Cyclones. And it’s always a plus when your post player can can free-throws at a high rate, four of Courtney’s six points came from her perfect night at the line.
