Location: Garfield HS
Team records: Garfield 6-0 (4-0 in league) vs. West Seattle 4-0 (4-0 in league)
Team previews:
Garfield Bulldogs: Garfield is the defending 3A runner-up. The team looks quite a bit different from a year ago with 6 seniors gone, a transfer out and a couple of transfers that came in. Former Head coach Lee Adams is gone and Marvin Hall has stepped into the position. The Bulldogs are on a roll early in the season. They played their best basketball in a statement game versus Seattle Prep, winning 55-30 in a blowout. Garfield’s team does not have a lot of height across the board, but they make up for it in speed and anticipation on the defensive end.
Some Key Players:
2020 6’4 F Dalayah Daniels– One of the top recruits in the country and Prep Girls Hoops WA number two player in the class. She has superior length and quick twitch muscles compared to anyone in the state. She excels in the open court and can defend multiple positions.
2019 5’8 G Samaiyah Tolliver– An unsigned senior that has arms longer than her height and deflects a lot of passes as a result. She can get hot from behind the three-line and score 15-20 points quickly.
2019 5’8 G Jayla Howard– One of the hardest working and best defenders on the team. Her motor runs high every game and she steps up big in clutch moments.
2019 5’8 G Faith Brantley– The Lincoln transfer has very good speed and can impact the game using her burst on both sides of the ball. She is unsigned at this time, but she will find her way onto a college roster.
West Seattle Wildcats: Head Coach Darnell Taylor returns, once again leading the undefeated Wildcats. West Seattle has been a state contender every year, since Coach Taylor took over the program. This may be his best team yet. The strength of this team is the depth and senior leadership from the guard positions. The core of the senior class has been impact varsity players since their freshman season, but they are itching for a shot at the State Title. Garfield will be West Seattle’s first game against a contending team this season.
Some Key Players:
2019 5’8 G Grace Sarver– The WSU signee is an aggressive slasher and rebounder. She does well in the up and down game and plays bigger than she is in the half court.
2019 5’7 G Kelsey Lenzie– The University of Portland signee is the best shooter on the team. She is capable of making 5 or more threes when she gets really hot. Kelsey is a high IQ player and has a strong work ethic.
2019 5’7 G Jasmine Gayles– The unsigned senior is another player on West Seattle that plays bigger than she is. She is a good athlete and does a lot of little things that can help her team win games.
2020 5’10 G/F Meghan Fiso– The talented junior has a strong frame and brings much needed versatility for the Wildcats. She is a legitimate Division 1 prospect hoping to do her part to guide West Seattle to a long-awaited State Title.
