Continue ReadingI had the opportunity today to observe another workout led by Pure Sweat trainer David Ruckman. David works with boys and girls in the Belleville area. Today I was excited to hear that 3 of our local girls were going to be taking the time to work on their game on an ” off day”. The dedication being shown to work with a private trainer on a Sunday during the middle of the season was inspiring to me.
Kierra Winkeler is a 5’9 senior guard from Breese Mater Dei. Kierra is off to a good start in her last year. She has really improved her shooting, especially from behind the 3 point line. Kierra is currently averaging 16 points per game. She is shooting 58% from the field and 77% from the line. She is a good defender and uses her height and long arms to defend very well at the guard position. Kierra has always had an excellent mid range game but has used her work in the off season to improve her range. The workout today showed the work she has put in and will hopefully allow her to keep her strong senior season going.
Izzy Akoro is a 6’1 senior forward for O’Fallon high school. She has had the unfortunate luck of having knee problems for a good portion of her high school career. Izzy only played 6 games her junior season and missed the AAU season. She has an unusual set of skills in that she can handle the ball and shoot like a guard. She stands 6’1 and isnt overly athletic yet. She is rounding back into form. She is trying to find her role while returning to her high school team that has been forced to live without her. In addition her conditioning and speed/agility are returning a little bit at a time. Izzy has had attention from many schools large and small. In the end she will have to do everything she can to help her school team win and then determine what is her best decision.
Sammi Matoush is a 5’11 senior guard from Hillsboro. Sammi is a 2 time All State selection. So far for this season she is averaging over 25 points per game. Sammi is a deadly 3 point shooter that also is excellent in finding other ways to score. She will take the ball to the hole and finish or pull up. Sammi is also a good offensive rebounder that will willingly fight for additional chances on the boards. She is a tough matchup in high school because she will beat a taller slower girl off the dribble and will post up your guards. Sammi has multiple offers, but being a great student she is making sure to look at all levels for the best education too.
Coach Ruckman does an excellent job with these girls working on their shooting. He has them shooting off the catch, off the fade and off the curl. In addition they work dribble moves into their shot. While doing the shooting drills the girls are doing the passing off dribble moves. With all of this different action the girls get a great workout. The girls get a workout in dribbling, passing and shooting. Before they leave the gym they must make 10 free throws in a row. Luckily these young ladies can shoot it!
