In a spirited contest from start to finish, the rival schools served notice that they will be factors in the races for the 3A (Poly) and 4A (Western) state championships. Poly won this match up by a final score of 69-61. Junior wing Dasia “Stix” Townes scored 19 points for the winners and transfer Karis Ferguson added 17. Western was led in scoring by freshman Ny’Ceara Pryor who had 20 points and 7 steals.
This Could Be Poly’s Year
Poly is a real threat in the 3A division. Last year’s knock on them was their lack of consistent scoring. In a loss to Bishop McNamara they scored 67. They put up 69 last night against a quality opponent so this is clearly a different Poly team. They always bring hustle and effort so they have a chance land in the final four at Towson University in March.
The Doves Could Overachieve
Western is young and inexperienced but they do not seem to know that. Their freshmen, Ny’Ceara Pryor and Gabby Johnson, are as good as advertised and they show no fear. Sophomores Sanaya Gray and Vashae Rideout are fearless as well. They will have growing pains but will benefit in the long run. I see a likely clash with Howard in a 4A regional match up unless Catonsville comes on strong down the stretch. Depending on how the brackets line up, the Doves have a chance to land in the final four.
Run it Back
We are probably going to see this match up again for the Baltimore City championship later this season. City looks pretty good so far and will probably push both of these teams, but these two should be clear favorites to the reach the title game. I expect it to be just as entertaining.
