She chose to transfer from St. Frances Academy, which is one of the most successful programs in DMV girls basketball history, to a brand new program which has no long track record of success. In fact, before last season it did not exist. Head coach Sam Caldwell came over from Riverdale Baptist and started it from scratch. They are a nationally ranked team in just their second season in existence, and Pinnick is a big part of their success.
The sharp shooting guard has knocked down an impressive 62 threes so far this season, and shows no signs of letting up. In addition to her shooting prowess she has become more focused and effective on defense. Coach Caldwell made it known early that she would have to earn minutes by applying herself defensively and she has responded. At 5’7″ she is fast and athletic and can punish defenders who close out too hard by attacking and finishing at the rim. Being a true three level scorer and exceptional defender on a nationally ranked team will have her in high demand.
I had a chance to chat with her at the Public vs. Private Challenge…
PGH: You live on the East side correct? How is it having to commute so far to school?
Delicia: When you’re committed to something a 45 minute drive isn’t that bad.
PGH: What made you want to transfer after having success at St. Frances?
Delicia: I had the opportunity to help build a national contender while preparing myself for college and playing with and against some great players and a great coach so I made the move.
PGH: How has the transition been so far?
Delicia: It’s been exciting. Being part of this new program and contributing and helping my team win games is nice. We are aiming for the top spot.
PGH: Coach Sam said he has emphasized defense with you. How has that helped you?
Delicia: That’s true and it helped because I didn’t want to only be an offensive threat but a good defender too.
PGH: What summer teams have you played for?
Delicia: I started playing when I was 9 and I have mostly played for the Maryland Lady Shooting Stars and then I moved to Team Durant last year.
PGH: Good luck the rest of the season.
Delicia: Thanks you!
