Kentridge entered the game number one in 4A and Woodinville had been sliding between 2 and 3 in the last week. Last year’s matchup was one to remember, well not for Kentridge, as Woodinville hit a game winner in overtime to advance to the state finals. This year’s game lived up to the hype as well! Controversial calls, Jordyn Jenkins fouling out in the third quarter, crucial missed free throws and overtime! Woodinville came away with a huge overtime win at the end that left them celebrating.
5 Takeaways:
Kentridge’s post play is a major mismatch for 4A teams
This may sound like I’m stating the obvious and that is exactly what it is. 2020 6’2 F Jordyn Jenkins displayed agility, skill and power from the start, blocking Woodinville’s leading scorer multiple times in the paint. 2019 6’4 F JaQuaya Miller pushed the ball in transition, facilitated and scored inside with ease. If Jenkins does not foul out, this game probably has different result. Miller ended the game with the best stat line with 30 points and 24 rebounds.
Dayla Ballena is one of the state’s best point guards
The 5’7 junior has always done a good job of facilitating the offense, but she is doing a much better job of looking for her own shot now. She is at her best when she is in full on attack mode. She also has quick feet and hands that allow her to be a disruptor defensively. She currently holds an offer from EWU.
Woodinville is a serious contender
Head Coach Scott Bullock will tell you, Woodinville did not play its best first half. They got down by as many as 15, with Jenkins and Miller dominating inside. Woodinville withstood a strong run from Kentridge and was only down by 8 at the half. They stormed back in the second half and eventually sent the game into OT. If they get hot at the right moment in March, they are capable of giving any team a run for their money. They play hard and can pass the ball pretty well, led by Seattle U signee, 2019 PG Madison Dubois. 2022 5’8 G Veronica Sheffey is also a player to keep an eye on moving forward.
Mia Hughes plays HARD
2021 5’10 C Mia Hughes (Woodinville) has quick and strong hands that allow her to make a lot of plays around the paint. Although undersized as a post player, she keeps playing hard play after play. Jenkins blocked her shot about a half dozen times, but she kept coming! She scored the majority of her game high 37 points right in the paint where she is most comfortable. Simply put, she has a nose for the ball!
Kentridge is more than “The trio”
2020s Dayla Ballena and Jordyn Jenkins, along with 2019 JaQaya Miller receive all the headlines, but Kentridge has more talent than that. 2019 5’9 W Hana McVicker plays really hard and fulfills her role on the team. 2022 6’0 F Naomi Hall brings length and rebounding to the team off the bench as well. 2020 5’9 G Kiernan Denckla can shoot it pretty well, she can defend a couple of positions and she has some length to her.
