The Prince George’s County Middle School Championship Game has been a big deal in the DMV for years. It is the only county in the state that really goes all out for pre-high school games. Many All-American’s have played in the game and there have been a lot of special performances in both the boy and girls sector of the game. 2019 is no exception as it as CH Flowers High School hosted the sold out standing room only event that some waited outside for nearly an hour to get into the building. Of Course Prep Girls Hoops Maryland was in the house along with dozens of high school coaches making their pitch for their future star.
THE GAME:
The game matched Walker Mill Middle against Gwynn Park Middle both undefeated during the regular season, so something would leave with their streak broken. This was the first time the games were expanded to the high school regulation 8 minute quarters (up from middle school 6 minutes) Gwynn Park took charge from the beginning leading by as much 9 points 17-8 until the Panthers launched their comeback scoring 12 straight points to end the quarter 20-17. The lead was extended to 45-35 at the half and that would be the closest that the Yellow Jackets would get. Qadence Samuels scored 31 points in the first half breaking the record halftime scoring record previously held by DeJanae Boykin*. Things completely fell apart in the second half for the Yellow Jackets as they were outscored 24-1 in the third period. Samuels continued to roll as the mercy rule kicked in and kept the clock running. In the end Walker Mill were crowned the 2019 PG County Middle School Champions with a 80-40 victory. I was told that the 80 points and 40 point margin of victory were both championship game records. Qadence Samuels’ 44 point performance also broke the record held by former Walker Mill player Keena Samuels**.
Standout Players From The Game:
Qadence Samuels – Walker Mill – 8th Grade
Qadence SamuelsQuadence put on a spectacular performance on the big stage. She scored 44 points and could have went for over 50 if not for the running clock and her mercifully leaving the game with around four minutes remaining to play. She scored from inside and out hitting several three pointers one of which was a turnaround fadeaway from close to half court as the first quarter expired. She did work from all five positions showing high school coaches that the six footer is ready to contribute immediately on at her future school.
Amaya Durrett – Walker Mill – 7th Grade
Amaya DurrettAmaya added 14 points all in the second half. She hit three pointers and got to the basket and finished. She was key in the pivotal third quarter scoring 10 of the teams 24 points. She will return to Walker Mill for her another season and should have them making another trip to the finals.
Nadia Simpson – Walker Mill – 7th Grade
Nadia SimpsonNadia may have been the fastest player on the floor. She used her speed to move the ball quickly in transition and blow past defenders getting to the basket. She knocked down a couple of three pointers and show good vision on the floor. Nadia will also return next season.
Meeya Gause – Gwynn Park – 8th Grade
Meeya GauseMeeya had a solid first half scoring all of her team high 16 points in the first. She is a good finisher and uses her body well to draw contact. She was one of the games top players but, as the game got more and more out of hand she along with some other starters had to call it a day.
Destinee Ellis – Gwynn Park – 7th Grade
Destinee EllisDestinee scored 12 points but left the game disappointed that she didn’t get the championship trophy. She will get another chance to lead the Jackets back to the big game. She was impressive going coast to coast and finishing and will need to continue that work to give Walker Mill a chance next season.
Trinity Neal – Gwynn Park – 8th Grade
Trinity NealTrinity was very good in transition. She can navigate through traffic and score at the basket. She finished the game with 8 points in the first half. The 5’4″ point guard looks to be ready to play at the next level.
Kristian Harris – Walker Mill – 8th Grade
Kristian HarrisKristian comes from a basket ball family and seems to have learned a lot from her older siblings. She has good game IQ and sees the floor well. She can score but, looked to get her teammates involved. She finished with 8 points and assisted on many of her team’s 80 points.
Aleah Rodriguez – Walker Mill – 6th Grade
Aleah RodriguezAleah was one of the games youngest players but, she performed like a veteran. She attacked the basket really strong and uses the Euro well to change directions. She got to the line and knocked down the three pointer.
Congratulations to both teams on a very good season.
