The explosive athleticism is not necessarily a strong point across the board, but the basketball IQ and skill level of the 2022 point guard class is there. Prep Girls Hoops has seen countless games throughout the course of the last year, including club and high school season. Below are just some of the better point guards in the freshman class, with many more to be covered in the future!
Point guards to watch:
2022 Veronica Sheffey, 5’8, PG, Woodinville HS- This left-handed guard is a player! She is a key piece to 4A Woodinville’s attack and she brings a presence beyond her years. She has a strong build and her perimeter shot has really come around during the course of this high school season. She has solid handles and speed on the floor. While she has shown some freshman moments during the year, she has greatly outplayed some seniors in key moments as well. She will be a young player to watch at this year’s state tournament in Tacoma.
2022 Olivia Moore, 5’7, PG, Mead HS- Olivia is definitely one of the better shooters at the point guard position in her class. She has a good understanding of the game and really competes. Her season started off slower with a nagging injury, but she really stepped up in some games for Mead. She played very well last summer on the circuit against older players and I expect her to take her game to another level this spring and summer as well.
2022 Aniyah Heavens, 5’6, PG, Pasco HS- Aniyah has a little bit of flair to her game and plays with a chip on her shoulder. She has good handles and can get hot from deep when left open. She’s had some impressive moments for Pasco this season and is apart of a team loaded with underclassmen, including backcourt teammate Mya Groce (5’6, 2022). Overall, Aniyah is definitely one of the better point guards in Eastern Washington.
2022 Kacey Spink, 5’7, PG, Ferris HS- As a freshman, Kacey Spink was one of the best players for Ferris. She has a slight frame, but she makes up for it with her skill set. Her team was really outmatched in some games, but she competed and tried to make things happen. She has a pretty good jumper and she can use the step through the get her shot off as well.
2022 Leila Hosn, 5’5, PG, Shorecrest HS- Leila is another point guard with a more slight frame, but she has good ball handling skills and a little bit of shift to her game. She had some solid moments for Shorecrest and I expect her to be one of the top players in their program for years to come.
