In the evenings first game, the Montini Lady Broncos were able to turn away a tough and resilient team in the St. Ignatius Wolfpack. The Broncos led most of the game, but faced some adversity in the third quarter when the Wolfpack stormed back to within one point. Montini answered with a 9-0 run to end the third quarter and never looked back in the fourth. Here are my five stars of the game:
Star: Frankie Kokkines – The team’s leading scorer in the Regional Championship game, Kokkines played a different role this time around. The 5’10’’ Senior did a little bit of everything, and really stepped up in the second half to put a halt to the St. Ignatius comeback attempt. Kokkines moves well in the lane and uses her size to maneuver around post defenders and finish at the hoop. She was also able to step outside and knock down a few jump shots with her consistent shooting stroke.
Stars: Molly Gannon – While she couldn’t get many clean looks in the second half due to Montini’s defense keying on her and often double-teaming her when she got the ball, Gannon paced St. Ignatius in the first half to keep them within striking distance. She was able to knock down a couple long range threes from outside and set up her teammates in the second half to keep the Wolfpack in the game.
Stars: Lauren McDonald – Opposite of her PG teammate, McDonald couldn’t get in a rhythm in the first half but was a key part in the third quarter comeback. The 5’8’’ Sophomore Guard has a quick first step and speed to get by her defender and finish strong at the rim. Also showed the ability to knock down contested shots beyond the arc.
Stars: Zoe Mackay Zacker – Known for her consistency from three-point land, Zacker showed Tuesday night that she can and will do whatever it takes to help the Broncos succeed. The 5’10’’ Senior was a big-time leader on the court to stop the St. Ignatius run in the third quarter and put the game away in the fourth. Zacker is strong with the ball and finds openings so her teammates can set her up.
Stars: Sophie Sullivan – I am very impressed by how Sophie has developed offensively throughout the season. I had an idea that she would draw Molly Gannon on the defensive side and make things tough for the sharp shooter, and she did. Offensively, though, Sullivan put up 16 points, scoring the ball efficiently at every level. Her ability to move well without the ball and knock down shots from deep or finish around the rim are terrific.
