In the evenings second game, the Benet Redwings took control early on against Whitney Young, and held on for a 72-63 Victory, and now will face Montini in the Sectional Championship on Thursday. Here are my five stars from the game:
Star: Timia Ware – The Sophomore PG was an absolute spark plug off the bench to keep Whitney Young in the game after Benet got out to a commanding lead. Ware is quick and shifty with the ball in her hand and thrives in transition. She also showcased her ability to win one-on-one match ups by either beating the defender off the dribble or stepping back and knocking down outside shots.
Stars: Brooke Schramek – Like Montini’s upperclassmen in the first game, Schramek was vital in sealing this win for the Redwings. The 6’1’’ Junior used her size and skill to get herself open underneath and craftiness to finish at the rim. Schramek also knocked down several free throws late in the game to help Benet come out on top. She finished with 15pts and 5rebs.
Stars: Clara Prasse – In the game preview I posted Tuesday morning, I talked about how Prasse’s solid defense would be key for a Benet win. While she did play great defense on Young’s dynamic Guards, I was very impressed with what she was able to do on the offensive end. The Senior PG was able to get herself open with and without the ball to set up easy baskets. I couldn’t decide what was more impressive between her 3-pointer four feet behind the line, or her reverse layup in traffic, so I’ll just say both got my attention an equal amount. Clara finished with 12pts, 5rebs, 9ast and 2stl.
Stars: Kayla Green – Everyone knows that Whitney Young has several talented Guards, and all of them could go off on any given night. Well, this was Kayla Green’s night. The JR Guard put up 27 points on a very solid defensive team in Benet. Green won nearly every one-on-one match up with her impressive skill set with the ball and hit several shots beyond the three-point line.
Stars: Kendall Holmes – For a team that has as much talent as Benet, it is relatively rare that one player puts on such a clinic scoring the ball in one game. Kendall Holmes is a natural. She knocked down shots from deep, scored on put-backs from offensive rounds, and converted well on her free throws en route to a team high 24 points. Her 5’11’’ frame and ability to find openings in the defense really set her up for success.
