The muscle behind all of the wins has been Oumou Toure. The top flight senior has helped the Braves to a 66-6 record in the last three seasons combined. They are currently ranked as the number three 3A team in Washington and a real threat to win it all. Toure has a long list of accomplishments that deserve to be recognized, especially for those outside of the Tri-Cities. Let’s take a closer look at Oumou Toure and what she is all about.
First and foremost, Oumou is more than a basketball player. Her coaches love how great of a teammate she is, but her academic success is every bit as important as her on court success. She has a long list of academic accomplishments including: Columbia Basin College Dean’s List, Kamiakin High School’s Honor Roll and Kamiakin High School Dean’s List. She plans on playing professional basketball and then becoming an engineer. Her ability to get it done in the classroom and consistently achieve great grades attracted schools that could provide high level basketball and academics. She said academics was highly important for her college destination and she found that in Butler University, of the Big East. The USA Today ranks Butler as the number two academic institution in the entire mid west. The future engineer said, “When I visited Indianapolis I immediately fell in love with the coaching staff, players, and the city. The playing style fits how I want to play.” Butler enrolls about 4,000 students and prides itself in recruiting the absolute best student-athlete they can. So, just how good of an athlete is Toure?
Good enough for 2,000 plus points scored in her career! She broke the school scoring record during her junior year and has just been adding on to it ever since. She’s a regular 20-10 threat and sometimes 30 and 15 type numbers. She is a very strong athlete at 6’0. She finishes with a mixture of finesse and power inside the paint and can follow her own misses at a high rate. In a 90-51 win over Pacso on senior night, she recorded 23 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks. These numbers have become “regular” for spectators to see Toure put up in the Tri-Cities. She is currently working on developing her all around skill set to get ready for Butler. “I am working on fine tuning my skills so they are more transferable at the next level,” says Toure. Continuing to knock down the three point shot with consistency is the next step and she will work earnestly to become the ultimate inside-out threat that she can be at the next level.
While preparing for the next level is in the back of her mind, winning a 3A State Championship is at the front. It would be the perfect send-away to an outstanding high school career. Win or lose, Oumou Toure’s legacy at Kamiakin High School is set in stone.
