That’s an impressive accomplishment for the 5-foot-5 guard; especially when you consider that she doesn’t even think she was that very good at the beginning of her IMS career.
“Even though I was the leading scorer my freshman year, I still wasn’t very good. So, being able to see the improvement and how much I was able to score by the end has been really fun for me,” Yoder said. “It shows me that my hard work has been paying off.”
Yoder averaged 8.3 points that freshman season. She just finished up her senior season as Class 1A’s leading scorer with 27.5 points per game. Dowling’s Caitlin Clark was the only other player in the state, regardless of class, to average more points per game than Yoder.
“To get the best at a sport you really have to put in a lot of work and a lot of time. You really have to get in the gym and work really hard, and that’s how you get better. It doesn’t really matter what skills you come in with, if you work hard, you’re going to get somewhere,” said Yoder.
She says that along with her work ethic, it was her quickness on the floor that allowed her to thrive.
“I think my biggest advantage is my quickness. I rely on being able to push in transition and being able to get by people off the dribble,” said Yoder. “And I’m good at coming off screens and coming of the dribble to shoot.”
In January, Yoder committed to Indiana NAIA Goshen College. There, she likely won’t be the best player, and she’s embracing the opportunity and the challenge. She’s also eager to experience the team togetherness that Goshen has.
“I really like the school that I’m committing to, and not just the basketball part of it. I like the team aspect they have; I’m a really social person, so I like a team where we’re around each other and lot and team bonding is really important to me,” said Yoder.
“I’m excited to play with all the really good players, and get better while I play against players that are better than me.”
