Oh how sweet it is! You asked for it and now you have it. The SoDak Class AA Sweet 16 is going to be crazy. There are too many outcomes to predict but trust and believe these games will be good. The winner of each game moves on to the state tournament. Simple, win or go home. And nobody wants to go home in this cold weather. Match-ups feature teams traveling across the state to a different time zone, while others are just up the road. Then other games feature West River vs East River. If you’re from South Dakota, then you know that’s a big deal. Who gets in? Who’s on upset alert! Who’s going to punch their ticket to state? The first of the month is always slated with pay day and bills being due at the same time. However, March first sets off March Madness. Put up a couple coins and make your way to one of these games. Check out the crazy atmosphere, observe it and enjoy!
Games
#1 O’Gorman Vs #16 Pierre
Keys to the game: Does Pierre have enough height and length for the much bigger OG Knight? Ronsiek and Akoi can be a load. Can OG’s guards keep Mikkelsen in front of them. The speedy guard can get past just about anyone.
#2 Harrisburg vs #15 Roosevelt
Keys to the game: The Tigers have been in this spot before. They have made it to the state championship game two years in a row. Can they continue it? Roosevelt has seemed to figure it out as of late. Can the team rally together for an upset? For Harrisburg, who has about 5 college type players on the team, they will rely on their veterans Jeniah Ugofsky, Aby Phipps, Sadie Roth and Kiki Berndt
#3 Lincoln vs #14 Huron
Keys to the game: The Pats play fast and faster. They will need Morgan Hansen and Emma Osmundson to help lead them to state. Sometimes they can get off track but most likely they real it back in and finish strong. Huron will have to be as scrappy and fierce as ever. That’s what this team is built on. It may take one of those games where everything is going in the hole for them. Like super efficient!
#4 Brandon Valley vs #13 Aberdeen Central
Keys to the game: Brandon Valley senior led group doesn’t want the season to end this way. How will Danica Kocer play? Is she on fire? Will Ashley Wells be the difference maker? Can Trinity Law control the game? Aberdeen will have to stick to their game plan. If they allow BV to break loose this could be over fast. But the mastermind of coach Dawn Seiler will surely be ready for anything.
#5 Brookings vs #12 Douglas
Keys to the game: Give it to Jewett and get the heck out of the way! No seriously Jewett will be the main factor in everything. As she goes, so does Brookings. Douglas will have a tall task in front of them. By tall I mean Johanna Miller, the 6’3 junior for Brookings.
#6 Washington vs #11 Rapid City Central
Keys to the game: 6’1 Jami, 6’1 Bartling and 6’5 Schetnan for Washington. Tall, tall and taller. They post the biggest front court in the state. Can they work together?
#7 Rapid City Stevens vs #10 Yankton
Keys to the game: Yankton has two really good guards, like sneaky good. Wolfgram and Wuebben will need to cause fits for RC Stevens defense. They have to be very efficient in order to limit RC Stevens transition offense.
#8 Mitchell vs #9 Sturgis Brown
Keys to the game: If I was a betting man, which I am, but not on high school basketball. The lines would be even, again not betting. Either team could sneak a win in the next round.
