With Maret securing the ISL regular season banner and National Christian Academy skipping the NACA Nationals this game had little to do in any standings and more about preparation for the post season and for the Eagles it was all about celebrating “senior night”. Maret has a really young team full of freshmen and sophomore but, coach Brooke Wilson has turned this group into one of the top teams in D.C., NCA countered with six college bound seniors and a legacy of being a national contender every year. As for the game NCA exploded to and 11-0 lead and it looked like the game would be over early. Star Anissa Rivera (UNC Central) went down and had to be helped to the bench and the Frogs found their rhythm tying the game at 19 to start the second quarter. Rivera later returned and was on cruise control as fellow senior Sonia Smith took over the game. Smith scored 13 in the first half and finished with a game high 43 points in her final home game. By halftime the score was up to 15 points with the Eagles leading 39-24 and the lead ballooned to as much as 35 points in the second half. Maret had solid play from freshmen Page Greenburg (19 points), who at times looked like the best player on the floor and freshman Ava McGee (18 points) but, the Frogs didn’t have the size or experience to make a comeback run as they fell 82-51.
Takeaways from the game:
Sonia Smith break out game scoring 43 points in her final home game confirms what many insiders have known for years, she is an elite level scorer that should have an incredible career at Sacred Heart.
Sonia Smith
Promise Cunningham (UNC Central) scored 12 of her 14 points in the second quarter breaking open what was a tie game at that point showed her ability to turn it on when her team needs her to.

Zaiha Minnis is a strong physical force inside for the Frogs. Maret doesn’t have a true center so she is forced to do the dirty work inside and the freshman holds her own against older and taller players.
Zaiha Minnis
Freshman Ava McGee is very aggressive and has a deceptively quick first step. She is really good at getting to the basket and drawing contact. She got to the line for thirteen free throw attempts making only six. If she improves her percentage over the summer she can be one of the regions leading scorers next season.

Junior Jali Tucker looks set to be the anchor of the Eagles for her senior year, her shot looked good and she attacked the basket well. Fellow junior Kaiya Creek will return healthy for her senior year and the duo should put the Eagles amongst the top teams in the country to start off the season.

Maret’s freshman Page Greenburg showed of a good shot with a quick release. She showed a good overall game and is one of the areas top players regardless of class.

Maret has not been seen as a basketball powerhouse in years have a talented team of freshmen and sophomore players that will make them a team to be reckoned with for at least the next three years.

National Christian Academy has the best feeder program we’ve seen all season in the “Little Eagles”
