We will cover who you should watch for, the teams that could come out of nowhere, and of course, the bracket buster candidate. We will also list five players from each class that you need to keep an eye on throughout the bracket as they can really change the game in a hurry. The complete Region 5 bracket is posted below.
The Teams
Center Point-Urbana (18-2)
West Burlington (15-4)
Central Lee (17-5)
Mid-Prairie (11-9)
Mount Vernon (9-10)
Louisa-Mascatine (9-11)
West Liberty (7-13)
Solon (3-17)
The Favorite
Center Point-Urbana
With just two losses on the year, Center Point-Urbana comes in as the favorite to get to state. They have played a pretty tough schedule and are scoring 61.5 points a game. This is a team who doesn’t shoot the 3-pointer that well, but are really good in the paint. They can’t get too confident, because they are a team that could be beat. Senior Callyn Fox is scoring 14.2 points a game and is shooting over 50 percent from the field
The Sleeper
West Burlington
West Burlington isn’t a team that is going to score from inside the perimeter on you and there isn’t much you can do to stop them. They have only made 32 3s this year and are shooting 23 percent from deep. Scoring 54.2 points a game, you really have to pack it in against them. They are very good at forcing turnovers as they have 363 steals on the year. Sophomore Annaka Harris is leading West Burlington in scoring as she scores 14.5 points a game.
The Outside Shot
Central Lee
I have Central Lee as the outside shot in this region despite splitting two games with West Burlington. They have good quick guards but also a little bit of height with two 6’1 posts. They are scoring 55.5 points a game this year, a lot of which have came at the line. Mya Merschman, a sophomore, is leading the team in scoring at 18.4 points a game.
