We will cover who you should watch for, the teams that could come out of nowhere, and of course, the bracket buster candidate. We will also list five players from each class that you need to keep an eye on throughout the bracket as they can really change the game in a hurry. The complete Region 1 bracket is posted below.
The Teams
Iowa City (16-2)
Bettendorf (15-6)
Davenport North (12-8)
Muscatine (8-12)
Davenport Central (4-16)
The Favorite
Iowa City
Iowa City is easily the favorite in this region. They are 16-2 on the season and they are scoring 67.9 points a game which is the best in the region by over 10 points. They are shooting the ball on the season at a 44.7 percent clip, which is also the best in the region. Iowa City rarely turns it over, and shoots it well a big reason they are the favorite. The junior duo of Aubrey Joens and Rose Nkumu average 23.4 points a game and 18.2 points a game, respectively. Those numbers are the top two scoring totals in the region.
The Sleeper
Bettendorf
Bettendorf makes their living at the free throw line. This season they have made 254 free throws and are shooting 65 percent from the charity stripe. Bettendorf has beaten Davenport North twice this year but they fell in one of their games to Muscatine. A very experienced squad, they will look to pull an upset as they are on the opposite side of the bracket from Iowa City. They are led by Kylie Wrobleski, a senior, who averages 17.2 points a game.
The Outside Shot
Davenport North
This is a team that has all of the potential in the world to get hot from behind the arc. They have made 140 3-pointers on the season and are scoring 57.0 points a game. Davenport North is a team that dishes out a lot of assists, but they also turn it over quite a bit. Against a team like Iowa City, that’s going to put them in a hole quickly. Bella Sims, a sophomore, is scoring 10.7 points a game this season to lead the team.
