These girls are still multiple years away from graduation, but it is the right time to get some names out there that have performed well in their freshman year. We have not started ranking any of these players yet, as it is still very early, but the time will come soon. Many freshman were impact players on the varsity level and we will highlight just some of those players below.
Class of 2022 Outlook:
The class of 2022 is yet another strong year of basketball players in Washington. In the stronger classes, there is a good mixture of guard play, versatile wings and a solid amount of size. 2022 covers each of those categories and a lot of players project as good college prospects down the road. The 2019 senior class in Washington has around 25 Division 1 signed players and over 40 total college signees so far. This class seems to be on par with those numbers early on and could surpass them when the time comes. Do not be surprised to see more high major signees in the 2022 class than 2019 had to offer. That being said, development, injuries and commitment to the game can vary a lot between now and three years from now.
SOME players to keep an eye on:
This class has years of coverage to come, but it’s worth mentioning just a few of the freshman that are good prospects at this stage.
2022 Drea Brumfield, 6’2, W, WF West HS- One of the highest ceilings in the freshman class. She has a frame that will automatically catch a Division 1 coaches’ eye. She is long and wiry. She has the freedom to run some point guard for her high school and she is pretty comfortable doing so. She is a shot blocking presence and runs the floor well. Division 1 coaches will be finding their way to WF West’s gym for the next one up!
2022 Jazmyn Stone, 5’5, G, Annie Wright HS- A quick and shifty guard that has put up some big numbers at the 1A level. She is a regular 20 plus point scorer and can apply pressure defense on the ball. Her best asset athletically is the extra gear she possesses in the open floor.
2022 Veronica Sheffey, 5’8, G, Woodinville HS- This left handed guard has a pretty strong frame for a freshman and it helps her attacking the basket. She has really expanded her range from her middle school days and can knock down the open three point shot. As a starter on one of the best 4A teams in Washington, her experience and confidence levels should be really high after this high school season.
2022 Rosa Smith, 5’7, PG, Lake Washington HS- Rosa Smith stepped onto the varsity level ready to contribute from day one, which is not so easy to do for most freshman. She is a heady point guard with good foot speed. She is versatile from the point guard position due to her ability to score, distribute, and defend. At 5’7, she averages over 5 rebounds per game and she gets over 3 takeaways per game as well. She has been the head of a strong season for the Lake Washington Kangaroos.
