All games on day one are loser out games, so these girls were playing for their seasons. Both teams came out a little bit slow to start in the early morning game, but things eventually picked up as the blood started flowing and by the end eveyrone’s blood was boiling!
The first quarter was spent feeling each other out with a score of just 11-6. The game picked up a little bit in the second quarter with 2019 5’8 PG Maya DuChesne bringing a spark for Snohomish, grabbing two steals and making some aggressive drives to the basket. Notre Dame soccer signee 2019 5’10 G Bea Franklin was picking up full court for Seattle Prep right from the get go and she does a good job of bringing her soccer mentality onto the hardwood. Seattle Prep turned the pressure up in quarter two running their full court press “diamond”, but still struggled putting the ball in the hoop at a high rate. Thankfully for them, Snohomish had an even harder time putting it in, missing a half dozen free throws in the quarter. Snohomish would trail 20-8 at half time, scoring just two points in the second quarter.
Snohomish came out with a spark to start the third quarter forcing Seattle Prep into a full timeout. Seattle Prep had 12 turnovers at the half and added four straight in a row a few minutes into the third. Seattle Prep would finally settle in with 2021 5’11 W Tamia Stricklin doing a little bit better distributing and staying involved, despite having an off shooting day. Heading into the fourth, Seattle Prep led 30-21. 2019 6’0 P Courtney Perry (Snohomish) struggled finishing in the first half, but really warmed up in the fourth quarter. The Menlo College signee cut hard and finished through contact. With 3:25 left, Snohomish cut the lead to 5, with a score of 34-29, forcing Seattle Prep into another timeout. Maya DuChesne kept the attack coming for Snohomish and they would tie the game at 39 with 20 seconds left. Seattle Prep was in possession and each team called a timeout to diagram their plan before the ball would be entered in again. The death of Seattle Prep had been turnovers all game and that would be their final blow after Snohomish forced them into another one. With 10 seconds left, Maya DuChesne would dribble the length of the court, kick it out and spot back up for the game winning three at the buzzer! Seattle Prep came into the game favored by many and led 99.9% of the game, but it was the final .1% of time remaining that counted.
Takeaways:
- Turnovers really hurt Seattle Prep. They totaled 21 for the game and their final offensive possession that resulted in a turnover hurt the worst.
- Seattle Prep’s 2021 6′ W Molly Moffit was impressive rebounding the ball and ended with 11 points and 14 rebounds
- Senior leader Maya DuChesne came through for her team when it mattered most! She not only hit the game winner, but she kept Snohomish in the game leading up to the shot.
