Continue ReadingWith the 2019 class rankings we’re breaking down each position’s top players. The shooting guard spot is the best position group in the state and the top of the list is made up of the top 3 players in the 2019 class. Here are Kentucky’s top shooting guards:
- Savannah Wheeler, Boyd County – Wheeler was voted Ms. Basketball this week and is more than deserving of the award and all the accolades that come with it. Savannah was the state’s leading scorer this year and will lead her team into Rupp next week as one of the favorites to win the state title.
- Emma King, Lincoln County – King is headed to the University of Kentucky and should be competing for time right away as a Freshman. Coming out of a Senior season where she averaged 18 points and 7 rebounds for a Lincoln County team that fell to Regional Champion Southwestern, King will go down as one of the best players in Lincoln County history.
- Kiara Pearl, Eastern – Pearl was part of one of the most balanced teams in the state as Eastern had 4 scorers average double figures. She’s a talented player that will likely see the floor early and often at Vandy next season. If she can improve her long range shooting, Kiara could be a really impactful player in Nashville next year.
- Hayley Harrison, George Rogers Clark – Along with Wheeler, Harrison will still be playing at Rupp next season as GRC won the 10th region title on Tuesday. Hayley is one of the top shooters in the state and proved it this season with shooting splits of 48/40/80 despite seeing the opposing team’s best defender every night out.
- Maaliya Owens, Scott County – The best player on the best team in the state, Owens will be expected to cut the nets down next week at Rupp Arena as part of the 33-1 Lady Cards. Maaliya is a high level scorer and will be the most likely to take a big shot at the Sweet Sixteen next week if needed. Like Harrison, Owens is a top notch shooter who put up shooting splits of 47/41/86 over the course of the year.
