With regards to the Freshmen (2022) class, I created a specific All-State team and Freshman of the Year award just for them, so you won’t see them in any of the other groupings except for maybe Honorable Mention All-State. As it specifically concerns the All-State teams, part of my decision was a judgement call based on skill and ability, but I also considered statistics and team success into the equation. At the end of the day, this is simply an attempt to honor girls who I thought stood out this season.
MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER
Sydney Parrish, 2020, 6-2 W, Hamilton Southeastern H.S.
I don’t know that there was a more obvious choice for this award, and there honestly isn’t a lot to say about Sydney that we haven’t mentioned previously. Sydney was the best player on the best team in the state, and she’s one of the top 2020 recruits in the country. She’s a very good perimeter shooter with range, she scored the ball at all levels though this season, but she also played much more physical, and she rebounded and defended at a high level as well. There aren’t many things she doesn’t do well on a basketball court, and it’s pretty obvious why she’s highly sought after by college programs.
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
Jorie Allen, 2019, 6-0 F, Bedford North Lawrence H.S. (Indiana)
This award can always go a number of different directions, and such is the case this year in Class 4A. There are other players who if you remove them from their lineup, their team would struggle. In Jorie’s case, not only is she irreplaceable in the Bedford lineup, but she also fulfills so many different roles for them. She naturally is a strong forward who can play in the mid-post and low-post, plus she rebounds the ball well for them. But she can knock down an open 3-pointer, and she has taken over ball-handling responsibilities from time to time when called upon to do so. She will also defend multiple positions.
MOST IMPROVED PLAYER
Jayla Smith, 2021, 5-10 G, Lawrence North H.S.
When I first saw Jayla as a Freshman last season, she was this tiny 5-4ish guard playing Junior Varsity ball at Lawrence North. Fast forward to the end of this season, and she has grown into a 5-10 playmaker who can create scoring opportunities for herself or others, she can hit shots with range, and she has ice water running through her veins, as she is calm and capable of taking big shots for her team. She went from primarily a JV player last season to their leader in scoring (14.4 ppg) and steals (3.7 spg) this season. She is still very thin, but she has nothing but upside in front of her right now.
COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Hannah Noveroske, 2019, 6-4 C, Michigan City H.S. (Xavier)
It was one year ago and the Junior All-Star team was being named, with Hannah being selected as a “Core” member, when just a couple of days later word spread that she had torn her ACL. It was so unfortunate for the true post, because she didn’t get to participate in the games. But her recruiting was settled, as she committed to Xavier. This season she bounced back with another strong showing. She plays with a tremendous motor for a player her size, she is physical inside, she keeps the ball high and has good hands and touch, and she is a like a vacuum rebounding the ball. It’s nice to see her on the floor again doing well.
FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Jessica Carrothers, 2022, 5-7 G, Crown Point H.S.
There are a couple of Freshmen who are more talented than Jessica, but no one put together quite the season she did this year, helping to lead Crown Point from a 13-11 record a year ago to a 28-1 record this time around. She also put up great numbers for just being a Freshman. She is tough-nosed, she plays with a nonstop motor, and she can score the ball effectively at all levels. Jessica is already drawing a great deal of Division-I interest because of the season she had, and it should be fun watching her develop her game over the next three years.
