Howard County realaly needs to move to a county championship game instead of just awarding it to the regular season champion. Long Reach and Howard were co-champs last year and apparently again this year. Or maybe not depending on who you talk to. Anne Arundel’s finest were Old Mill and South River all year.
1. St. Frances
Once again the Panthers won the IAAM championship. This was their 4th in a row and 12th overall. They are 22-3 headed into the Bishop Walsh Invitational. They beat Roland Park in the title game after losing to them twice in the regular season.
2. Roland Park
The Reds finished up their season 26-2 with one of the losses coming in the championship game to St. Frances. They still had a phenomenal season with both Mir Mclean and Ja’niah Henson turning in player of the year type seasons.
3. McDonogh
The Eagles had a solid season, finishing 20-6. They just could not get over the hump against St. Frances and Roland Park when it counted.
4. Howard
At 18-3 the Lions headed into post season play with some momentum. Their backcourt of Anii Harris, Marisa Sanchez Henry and Lauren Russell have been doing a lot of damage lately.
5. Poly
The Lady Engineers are 18-4 after beating Western for the City championship. They are a real threat in 3A as usual. Seniors Breshae Rice and Janya Lily have to deliver down the stretch for Poly to capture that elusive state title.
6. Long Reach
Are they Howard county champs or co-champs? Who really knows. They split games with Howard and both teams are really good. Lyric Swann gives them a chance to win every game. They are primed for a run through 3A.
7. Pikesville
The Panthers easily handled Western Tech in the Baltimore County championship. Teylah Saunders and Charia Roberts need to dominate inside for Pikesville to secure the 1A championship.
8. Frederick
Once again Makayla Daniels led Frederick to an excellent regular season at 17-3. I expect them to make a push for another 3A championship.
9. Oakland Mills
After a torrid 10-0 start the Scorpions trailed off a bit but still look like a contender in 2A. Senior Ailsyn Riggs needs to dominate inside to give them a chance.
10. St. Paul’s
An 18-3 record and an IAAM B conference championship will get you in the top 10. Coach Pat Conrad had the team prepared down the stretch and Destiny Ryles and Devin Conrad were big time.
11. Old Mill
The Patriots clinched their 5th straight Anne Arundel County championship with a thrilling win over South River. Mikiyah Mallett needs to continue her stellar play to give them a chance in 4A.
12. Mt. De Sales
The Sailors posted a 23-4 record before having their worst game of the season in their championship loss to St. Paul’s.
13. Western
The young Doves came up short in the city championship game but they showed growth down the stretch. Let’s see if they can get out of their region in 4A.
14. South River
The Seahawks were consistent all year before letting the Anne Arundel county championship slip from their grasp. Next up is the battle for 4A with tough opponents like Old Mill or North Point looming. Julia Fitzwater and Harley Herndon will lead the way.
15. Reservoir
This team has enough firepower to make a deep run in 3A. Senior Emily Dorn can do it all and she has plenty of help with Tiffany Hooker and Abby Bailey.
16. Forest Park
This is one of the most athletic teams in the area. They finished the regular season at 16-3 and posted some impressive wins. I would not want to face them during their run through 1A.
17. St. Vincent Pallotti
Pallotti was really a pleasant surprise this season. They finished up 15-10 and should be even better next season.
18. Coppin Academy
The Eagles are 17-5 as they start their journey through the 1A playoffs. This will be the Kayla Henderson and Nyshae Weaver show. They should advance back to the final four if everything bounces their way.
19. Western Tech
Tech came up short in the county championship game but had a solid season. Tiffany Manning is a player to watch in the playoffs.
20. Hereford
They finished strong and were steady most of the season. They are a dark horse to come out of their 2A region.
