Versatility is her best skill-set, and it shows up in the box scores. For the state-qualifier Cougars this season, Welter averaged 8.3 points, 1.7 steals, 4.6 assists and she was second on the team with 17 blocked shots.
“During the summer when I’m working out and going to the gym, I’m working on shooting and I mostly work on my guard work. And when it comes to my regular season, I mostly work on my post moves, and stuff like that,” said Welter.
“I feel like I can play any position on the floor, and that I’m able to guard any position on the floor because of my experience with AAU and regular season basketball.”
Welter is part of a very strong junior class at Cascade. The team’s four leading scorers this season were juniors.
“Our junior class is really athletic,” Welter said. “And we’ve always been the leaders for sports around our school, especially for basketball.”
All five Cougars starters will return from this season’s state tournament team. Which is why they’re ranked No. 1 in PGHIA’s Way Too Early Class 2A poll for next season.
“Since we have so many girls coming back from this previous season, I’m hoping we make it down to state again and that we’ll do a lot of damage there next year,” said Welter.
In the meantime, she’ll be spending her spring and summer with Iowa Prep 17U. Welter’s got some Division III interest coming in already, and hopes to see that recruitment swell this summer.
“I’ve been filling out college questionnaires and trying to get my name out there more,” she said. “But I’ve had some D3 schools contact me and I’m just trying to see how far I can go.”
