Continue ReadingAs we continue our wrap-up of the Iowa State Tournament, we are unveiling our evaluations for players in the sophomore class. Among all classes we have 139 total evaluations with 25 of those in the sophomore class. This isn’t an exhaustive list of everyone in the class at the event, but rather who played well or for extended minutes that we were able to get an eye on. This is Part I of II.
Moriah Prewitt – 5’7 G – Des Moines Christian
Prewitt is active on defense, but just a little undersized. She uses skill to play bigger than her height and is someone who can get to the basket rather easily. Hot-and-cold on offense right now but has a solid ceiling. Is always working on both ends of the floor and has a great motor.
Megan Miller – 5’11 W – Des Moines Christian
Miller is a wing who does not really look to go inside at all on the offensive end. Good frame and better foot speed than what it looks like. Heady player with the ability to pass the ball well. Sees things that others don’t on the floor. Love her ability to pass the ball but I want to see added offense going to the rim. Really solid shooter who has a little bit of range.
Kate Muller – 5’9 W – Des Moines Christian
Muller didn’t play a ton in the tournament, but she was effective when she was in the game. She moves the ball well and can move quick. Not a ton of offense right now, but she is a good defender who handles pressure well. Stocky frame and a player who I think can really improve.
Samantha Scott – 5’9 W – North Scott
Scott has a really compact shot and is a very solid off the catch. Needs to work on her ball handling because I didn’t see much ability to get into the lane and score off the drive. Pretty quick player but needs to get up to “speed” with the game on the offensive end. I think she can be really dynamic once she starts to play off the bounce more. Doesn’t make mistakes.
Hannah Neeman – 6’ F – Denison-Schleswig
Neeman probably didn’t play her best game at the tournament but I think she’s going to be a lot better at the next level. She plays out of position a little bit because offensively she is glued to the wing when I think she is more of a high post player. Needs to improve quickness and aggressiveness because with her size and skill she could be dominant once she gets it all together.
Paige Andersen – 5’10 W – Denison-Schleswig
Really solid shooter with ability to put it on the floor and get to the rim. Isn’t afraid of creating contact and getting to the line. Needs to be a little more decisive because when she has the ball it seems she is just a touch slow on deciding between shooting, passing, and driving. Really solid player though who will be a mainstay for two more years.
Merideth McKnight – 5’9 W – Grinnell
McKnight is a ball of energy. So much that at times I think she might be too aggressive on the defensive end. She can shoot it a little bit but when she gets the pass she seems to rush herself a touch. Really like her defensive ability though within her game and the offense is there, it just needs to get a little more consistent.
Abbie Draper – 6’1 F – Waverly-Shell Rock
Draper is a really solid player who does really well on the offensive end when not rushed. Plays the high post and the wing a bit more than I think she should but she’s solid on the inside. Really good rebounder who has great hands to grab the basketball. Really want to see her be able to get inside and utilize her skill to score more
Riley Wright – 5’10 G – Marion
Wright might have been my favorite player of the week. She has length and is a good ball handler. Wright has the ability to take the ball both ways. Ability to facilitate at a high level and get to the basket. Solid stop-and-go move allows her to break down her defender. Doesn’t shoot it much, but the ability is there. Needs to add the ability to create on the drive in ways other than a straight line.
Ella Van Weelden – 6’1 F – Marion
Van Weelden is a thin forward who has a ton of length. She has the ability to play out on the perimeter and shoots it well. A very unorthodox shot, but it works for her. Doesn’t create much for herself but is really good off the catch. A little bit more lateral quickness and I think she could play out on the wing very effectively. Can be a potent pick-and-pop/roll player.
Annika Headington – 5’7 G – Waukon
Headington is very solid when she gets on a straight line to the rim, but I don’t think that she quite has the ability to turn the corner quite yet. Not much of a shooter yet, but has the ability to knock a couple jumpers down. I think she is more of a lead guard who needs to work on her decision making with the ball.
Margaret Wacker – 5’9 W – Waukon
Wacker is an intriguing wing prospect who played a good game for Waukon. She is a player that I think is still growing offensively scoring wise, but is a very solid rebounder who is ultra tough inside. Needs to work on her basketball IQ because the defensive end way rough for her as she lost her man more than a few times.
Maggie Phipps – 5’10 SG – North Polk
Phipps is a quick guard who likes to shoot the ball. She can get to the rim and can drive the baseline really well. Heady on defense and is really good at getting into the passing lanes. Great motor but at times does too much. Doesn’t make great decisions with the ball and I think that she can sometimes get in a groove of taking bad shots. Committed to Drake.
