Continue ReadingAs we continue our wrap-up of the Iowa State Tournament, we are unveiling our evaluations for players in the sophomore class. Among all classes we have 139 total evaluations with 25 of those in the sophomore class. This isn’t an exhaustive list of everyone in the class at the event, but rather who played well or for extended minutes that we were able to get an eye on. This is Part I of II.
Janie Schoonhoven – 5’10 F – Unity Christian
Schoonhoven is a firmly built post presence who rebounds at a crazy high level. Soft hands allow her to snag the ball in the air and times her jump well. Solid post game although gets hurried at times. One of the better rebounders in the state and could take a huge jump as post scoring comes around.
Ellie Ware – 6’ F – North Linn
Ware is a mobile interior forward who uses length and her quickness. She can finish over the top of smaller players but needs to go up with the ball a little firmer. Moves pretty well for her size and isn’t afraid to bang around with other players inside the paint. Carves out space for drivers pretty well.
Ella Larsen – 5’9 F – Newell-Fonda
I think that Larsen is going to be a very good basketball player at the next level just because she already does so many things well. Good length, loves to pressure the ball on defense, and she can shoot it. They play an up-tempo style of play that she is very comfortable in. She’s already three inches taller than her sister who is an ultra-quick lead guard who’s going to play at the next level.
Maggie Walker – 5’8 W – Newell-Fonda
Walker is an extremely smart sophomore who can really fill up the stat sheet. Doesn’t get too hurried and seems to be able to play within the offense. Really like how she defends without fouling. Isn’t one to make a lot of mistakes, but also isn’t going to wow you at any one thing.
Ellie O’Brien – 6’ F – Marquette Catholic
O’Brien isn’t too quick but she’s very effective with all of her length. Finishes inside pretty well in traffic. Big target for passers to hit her and runs well through the middle in transition. Isn’t much of a jumper but rather uses her height to rebound the ball.
Rachel Leerar – 5’7 PG – West Hancock
Leerar is a very fluid guard who takes care of the ball. She can score at all three levels but is at her best when getting to the rim. Really good on-ball skills and looks to make plays with the ball. Needs to get better defensively but the potential is here for this thin guard to be really good. Has the athleticism needed to score on almost anyone.
Elise Boulton – 5’5 SG – Montezuma
Boulton is a really good shooter who is deadly off the catch. Needs to improve on her ball handling and defensive ability as she is an undersized guard, but her offense works well. Plays with toughness and is a vocal player. Doesn’t have the ability to attack quite yet, but in the offense Montezuma runs all she needs to do is shoot it.
Dylan Holland – 5’10 F – Montezuma
A big body inside, Holland really likes to just her body to create space. She’s doesn’t really do one thing great but does a lot of things really well. She’s mobile and quick laterally and plays solid defense on bigger players. Is going to be a player that gives good minutes at the next level.
Grace Larkins – 5’10 G – Southeast Polk
Larkins is one of the best sophomores in the state. Really good off of the dribble and creates havoc once she gets into the rim. Don’t think that she is overly athletic but is a very dynamic player. Love her ability to impact the game on both ends at a high level. Very good in transition either facilatating or scoring.
Riley Kruse – 5’10 F – Southeast Polk
Kruse is a very strong low post player that can handle the ball a little bit. You have no problem putting her up at the top of the key and passing the ball through her. Very good defender who does so without fouling. Sneaky athletic and has the ability to body you up on defense.
Ella McVey – 5’5 G – Dowling Catholic
I really like McVey’s game because she’s a workhorse. She has the ability to shoot it, handle it, and she’s in your face on the defensive end. Not someone who is going to stick out that much, but is going to be effective at both ends. Someone that is in your face the entire game. Committed to Michigan (softball).
Katie Dinnebier – 5’7 G – Waukee
Dinnebier missed all but two games last season and has come back this year and has played really well. A little undersized but she has a ton of skill. Isn’t going to beat you with speed as she is still kind of coming back from the knee injury. Does really well at getting to the line and is shifty enough to get to her spot.
