With zone defenses and the drive and dish man to man sets, it is critical to have players that can hit it with consistency. In this article I will cover some of the top shooters in Southern Illinois.
- Clare Breden 2021, Jerseyville/ Southern Illinois Hawks. Breden is an excellent shooter with deep range. She hit 67 three pointers during the season. Clare hit 49% from behind the arc. What she lacks in height at 5’5, Clare makes up for in quickness and ball handling. This year she showed an ability to move out a full step behind the line. Breden will play with the new Southern Illinois Hawks team run by CM coach Jonathan Denney. Clare with run with the 17U team.
- Sydney Harris, 2022 Edwardsville/Midwest Elite. Sydney brings the attitude of a scorer to any team she plays for. It did not matter to her that she was a freshman playing varsity. Sydney expects to score and expects to be responsible for hitting big shots. A 6ft wing, she hit 65 threes this year and made 53% of her attempts. Sydney has a bright future ahead of her as she continues to expand and improve her game.
- Rylee Pickett 2020 Greenville/Blue Star St Louis. Rylee was a big part of the huge year that Greenville had this year. She hit 48 three pointers and made 35% of her attempts. Rylee made it to a tie breaker for the final 4 at the State Farm 3 point shootout in 2A. She had many big games and could just be a back breaker to the opposition. In the regional final against Alton Marquette she hit 4 threes in the first 8 minutes to put the game out of reach early. She will be running with the Blue Star Renken 17U team.
- Lexi Niebrugge 2021 Teutopolis. Lexie was a big scorer for the State runner up Wooden Shoes. She hit 78 three point shots at a 49% clip for the season. Lexie is excellent at driving and creating shots, but, her calling is behind the arc. She has good size at 5’8 for a guard, Lexie will be a force the next two years as T-Town reloads for another run.
- Aubrey Hubbard 2020 Waterloo. Aubrey burst on to the scene early as a transfer to Waterloo. She ended with 72 three pointers for the year. For the season Aubrey made 38% of her three point attempts. During the year there were 9 games where she made at least 4 three pointers. Aubrey will need to continue to work on her driving/ball handling game to create more openings.
- Anna McKee 2021 Father McGivney/Blue Star. She is a long 5’8 guard that has deep range. Anna had an outstanding freshman campaign. With the number 2 scorer injured for most of the season this year, it was tough to get open looks. Anna has developed range on her shot and is very active finding open spots. She made 76 three point shots this season and made 31% of her attempts. At times she had to get those shots up for her team to score. I expect her percentage to increase in the summer and next season.
These girls are all outstanding shooters. As they work on their craft this summer I expect to see even more out of them next season.
