The Top Teams
Millennium (Last Year’s Ranking: #1)
After a great season, going 18-0, and winning the State Title, I don’t think Millennium is done yet. I think they have a significant chance of repeating this season. They are losing huge assets, such as Dominique Philips and Alaina Diggs. However, they are bringing back some talented players in Ali Zelaya and Trayanna Crisp. Last season, these two were vital to the team’s success, both averaging double digit points per game. Crisp is a freshman so she’s only going to come back more developed and seasoned. Zelaya is going to be a senior and will add some championship experience and veteran leadership.
Desert Mountain (Last Year’s Ranking: #4)
Desert Mountain is losing 4 seniors, only one of which I think really hurts them. They will definitely miss Kelsea Hurley’s scoring ability but they are bringing back some great pieces as well. The O’Reilly twins will be back as seniors and they both have great size. Sophie Gerber will look to be put in a bigger role now that the team’s primary scoring option has graduated. I really believe that they have a good shot at the title this season is they all come together.
Buena (Last Year’s Ranking: #5)
I think you’ll see the biggest jump in Buena this upcoming season. They are only losing 1 senior, who only averaged 1 point a game. They are bringing back their leading scorers, Freshman Alani Encinas and Junior Jaslyn Booker. They finished the season as the #5 ranked team going into the playoffs and now they are returning their entire team while other schools have lost a lot of talent in the 2019 class. Buena could be a surprise this season and a dark horse for the 5A State Championship.
