At its formation – Huron County consisted of all of the Firelands Region – part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. As the population increased, sections of the northern county were re-assigned to nearly formed Erie and Ottawa Counties, while the southern-most part was delegated to Ashland County. Even with all of the movement – Huron County features girls basketball programs from Monroeville, New London, Norwalk, St. Paul, South Central, Collins Western Reserve and Willard.
Let’s take a look at a number of talented underclassmen from Huron County.
Ally Burton – South Central – 5’8 Wing – Class of 2020
After an devastating ACL injury that forced her to miss her entire sophomore campaign, Burton returned the court this winter and showed why she is one of the area’s top players. An outstanding rebounder and athlete, Burton is a streaky shooter who earned Northwest District honors and was one of the Firelands Conference’s top scorers.

Crawford should be the area’s top returning player next season. The 2nd Team All-Ohioan went over the 1000 career point and added season averages of 20.2 points and 9 rebounds per game. Willard went all of the way to the district championship and Crawford – the leading scorer in the SBC Bay Division by more than 6 points – was the biggest reason for their success. She has a great combination of size and skill, a true match-up nightmare for opposing defenses.
Presley Feltner – Wilard – 6’0 Post – Class of 2020
A big and strong post who blocks a boatload of shots, Feltner is one of the emotional leaders for Willard. She is a good offensive rebounder who keeps the ball high and finishes around the rim with both hands. She carves out good position to get easy looks inside, but will also step out and knock down an open 3-pointer occasionally if she is left open. Feltner is an intriguing college prospect with a high ceiling.
Megan Hammersmith – St. Paul – 6’0 Post – Class of 2020
Hammersmith, who is also a standout volleyball player for the Flyers, is one of the area’s top post players. She is long and athletic, which helps her control the glass and put-back a number of her teammates missed shots. Megan scores many of her points off of pure athleticism and raw ability – if she were to polish up a few post moves, she would be one of the top posts in the class of 2020.
Danielle Smith is one of the area’s top offensive threats. (Photo Credit: Norwalk Reflector)Danielle Smith – St. Paul – 5’7 Forward – Class of 2021
Smith was a 1st-Team All-Firelands Conference selection after averaging 14.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. St. Paul’s leading scorer, Smith is a very good jump-shooter who has no problem making opponents pay if they her open from 3-point range. A “tweener” right now, Danielle has the frame to get stronger over the next two years, while finding a true position.
Kiaya Thierry – New London – 5’6 Guard – Class of 2021
Thierry will have a much larger role offensively in the 2019-2020 season, as New London tries to replace scoring machine Gabby Ledbetter. Kiaya’s jump-shot is pure and she shoots in well from 3-point land. She is a good ball-handler, who will break down defenses and make good decisions. Her quickness is an asset that she uses often on the defensive end.
