This brought together a host of in state programs as well as some top out of state teams. I saw teams from Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Minnesota perform at a high level. To recap the event, as I was only able to stay for Saturday, I will be putting together lists of the top players that I saw, regardless of class, over the next few days. Here are my top five shooters from the weekend.
Caroline Waite – 5’4 PG – Ames HS (IA) – All Iowa Attack EYBL 2021
Waite is a guard on the smaller side, but her shooting ability is going to be highly sought after at the next level. I saw her make a couple 3-pointers, and all of them were varying degrees of difficulty. She has a quick release and does have a nice step back in her game. Waite is a really solid shooter off of the catch and when in rhythm. This weekend I saw her take a couple more moving shots and I thought that she looked solid shooting those. Waite is a player who is going to be able to play both on and off the ball with her shooting ability at the next level.
Ashley Iiams – 6’1 PF – Ames HS (IA) – All Iowa Attack EYBL 2021
Iiams has always been a player who could shoot it a little bit but was a little streaky. This past weekend her shot looked a lot better than in the high school season. Her release was in a bit better spot and she created good lift to get her shot off over taller defenders. She is a very solid shooter when set and loves to hit those trailing 3-pointers. Iiams does a lot of her work on the inside and the mid-range, but I can see her having a huge year shooting the ball.
Josie Fleischmann – 5’8 2G/W – Ballard HS (IA) – All Iowa Attack Multi-Sport
Fleischmann shot the ball really well this weekend and during this past high school season I thought that she struggled with it at times. This weekend I saw her knock down quite a few shots in a row and her shot looked really good. She shoots it very well when in rhythm and this weekend was no exception. Love her game and ability to attack the basket and pull up. Fleischmann is going to be counted on this next year to shoot it at a high rate and I think she’s going to be able to do so.
Abby Welter – 5’8 W – Cascade HS (IA) – Iowa Prep Black 2020
When I saw Welter this past season she scored quite a bit but just didn’t shoot it all that much. This past weekend, she shot it quite a bit more and it was dropping. I think that this is an area of her game that she doesn’t have quite yet, but an increase in confidence will help her. Welter was draining shots from everywhere this weekend when I saw her and thought that it made her that much more dynamic. This next high school season is going to be big for Welter as Cascade is looking to get back to the state tournament.
Ally Hart – 5’9 PF – Johnston HS (IA) – All Iowa Attack National 2021
Hart didn’t see much run this past year on a loaded Johnston team. I think she’s going to be much more of a factor this next year. Hart showed me a workable jumper out to 18′ this past weekend and potentially could become a pretty solid 3-point shooter as she puts the work in. I really enjoyed seeing her shoot it because she looked really comfortable. I know that she isn’t a player who is going to shoot it a ton from the outside, but after this weekend I think that she’s going to have the opportunity to do so.
