PGH took a look at some of the best young and upcoming talent in the state. We have players that lead teams in scoring, rebounding and in some cases leadership.
PGH All-Freshmen/Newcomer First Team
Bella Swedlund of Winner 5’6 (2022) Swedlund lead the Winner Warriors to a perfect season and captured the Class A State title. She wasn’t your typical freshmen as she was the focal point of the team.
Avery Broughton of Corsica-Stickney 6’1 (2023) Broughton led Corsica-Stickney in scoring at 18 per. She was the go to player in every scenario for the Jaguars.
Kaela Martinez of Sioux Falls Roosevelt 5’7 (2022). Martinez was the second leading scorer for the Rough Riders. Started off being just a scoring option then transitioned to a traditional point guard.
Emily Boyer of Harrisburg 6’0 (2022) Boyer was the back up post in Harrisburg. The 6 footer did a great job filling in for injured senior Sadie Roth. Boyer really made a statement and basically locked up the started position coming into next year.
Taliyah Hayes of Sioux Falls Roosevelt 5’8 (2022) After missing the first 5 games, Hayes came in to lead the Rough Riders in scoring and steals. Hayes is one of those players that you don’t need to run a pay for, she just gets down hill and attacks the rim.
Second Team
Jayda McNabb of Rapid City Stevens 5’9 (2022) The Long and uber athletic freshmen was a significant contributor for RC Stevens. She has a next level gear she can tap into. McNabb still hasn’t tap into her potential. I’m sure she will flourish into something special.
Emilee Fox of Mt Vernon/Planastin 5’7 (2024) The 7th grader…Yup 7th grader help MVP all the way to the state tournament. Her crucial free-throw in a late game sent MVP pass the SoDak 16 and onto the state tournament.
Emma Yost of Parkston 5’11 (2023) Yost is a very skilled forward. She has really improved her game. Only in the 8th grade, Yost lifted Parkston to some very important wins this year.
Hannah Ronsiek of O’Gorman 5’9 (2022) Following in her big sister shoes, Hannah started to get more minutes as the season progress. She may not have had a huge impact in her freshmen year as her older sister but Hannah definily gained some exposure to the big stage.
Jessy Jo VanDerWerff of Gregory 5’7 (2023) Yet another 8th grader on the list. This newcomer in Jo VanDerWerff burst on the scene. Not too many know about her team in Gregory but Jo VanDerWarff still earned All-Southeastern South Dakota Conference.
Shalyane Negal of Avon 5’11 (2023) Negal has an all-round game. She lead the team in rebounds, chipped in with 12 ppg and added a few steals. Very important piece to Avon success this year.
Honorable Mention:
Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda of O’Gorman
Rylee Haldeman of West Central
Josslin Jarding of West Central
