Continue ReadingWith the high school season coming to an end, PGH award are next on the ballot. No voter fraud, collusion or Russian hacking. Just a dude going out to witness some good ball players, while using the eye test! Who balled out? Who was the best defender? Who came out of nowhere? Best team award? Newcomer and overall most upside? We had a lot of talent this year, a lot. That’s what makes these awards special. One, two or three could be deserving but in some cases they’re only one winner. I have some seniors and upperclassman on this award watchlist, however the young bucks came through and showed out.
What’s my reasoning? Well, I took in considerations of the entire year, injuries, postseason success, individual accomplishment and the fact that you can ball. Check it out….
Class AA All-PGH Team
(MVP)– Emma Ronsiek of O’Gorman 6’1 (2020) 15 ppg and 8 rbg. Ronsiek lead O’Gorman to the best record and the number one overall seed into this year state tournament. Until a first round upset from Mitchell, Ronsiek and the Knights had only lost to one other South Dakota school. She is arguably one of the best players in the state.
Trinity Law of Brandon Valley 5’9 (2019) Law is what we call baby Russell Westbrook. She can get down-hill with the best of them. She’s quick and changes directions in a hurry. In her senior year, she helped Brandon Valley win the state chip as a fourth seed. Law numbers are not overly wowing 10 ppg, 3rpg, 3apg and 3spg. But they are effective.
Jeniah Ugofsky of Harrisburg 6’1 (2019) Jen was a force down low. She was the swish army knife of the squad. At almost a double-double, 11ppg, 9rpg, 4apg and 3spg, Jen did it all.
Morgan Hansen of Sioux Falls Lincoln 6’1 (2020) The long and lanky junior had a solid year at 14ppg and 8rpg. She lead the Patriots to the state championship game against Brando Valley. The Patriots would lose; however Hansen will be eager to bounce back next year. They could be the heavily favorite.
Danica Kocer of Brandon Valley 5’9 (2019) Another Lynx made the All PGH Team. Kocer was the state tournaments “Spirit of Sioux” winner. Kocer season average 10 ppg and 3rpg. She capped of her senior campaign with the “Spirit of Sioux” award, All Tournament Team, All State Team and a state championship.
Michaela Jewett of Brookings 6’0 (2019) The Bobcat standout was simply sensational. She carried the team on numerous occasional. As Jewett went, so did Brookings. On the season she averaged a double-double at 19 ppg and 10 rpg
.
Second Team
Emily Mikkelsen of Pierre 5’6 (2019)
Emma Osmundson of Sioux Fall Lincoln 5’10 (2020)
Aby Phipps of Harrisburg 6’1 (2020)
Kyah Watson of Rapid City Steven 6’1 (2020)
Madison Wuebben of Yankton 5’9 (2020)
Havyn Heinz of Huron 5’6 (2020)
Class A All-PGH Team
(MVP)–Madysen Vlastuin of Lennox 6’1 (2020) The South Dakota State commit has a perfectly looking mid-range. She lead Lennox in scoring at 16 per. She’s a very skilled and smart player.
Lexi Unruh of Sioux Falls Christian 5’11 (2021) At SFC Lexi commanded double and sometimes thriple teams. Unruh has an all-round game and has improved her defense this past year.
Lexi Plitzuweit of Vermillion 5’9 (2021) The sophomore out of Vermillion stepped it up this year. She increased her scoring output and rebounding ability. Alone with a crafty game she average over three steals a game.
Hannah Parsley of Flandreau 5’9 (2020) At the guard spot you would be pressed to find a re-bounder. Not Parsley, she racked over 10 rpg along with 18 ppg. They’re not to many at that position who can carry that load.
Haleigh Timmer of St. Thomas More 5’10 (2021) A constant figure for STM even put up a 30 piece against Class AA’s state champions Brandon Valley. Timmer can run with the best of them.
Raven Cournoyer of Todd County 5’4 (2019) Filling the void after Valandra-Prue transferred, Raven put up number like 23 ppg, 5rpg and 6spg.
Second Team
Bella Swedlund of Winner 5’8 (2022)
Jayda Knuppe of Dell Rapids 5’9 (2019)
Rianna Fillipi of Lennox 5’9 (2020)
Morgan Hammerbeck of Winner 5’11 (2020)
Kali Nelson of West Central 5’10 (2019)
Madisen Koepsell of McCook Central-Montrose 6’0 (2021)
Class B All-PGH Team
(MVP)–Karly Gustafson of Ethan 6’0 (2019) Putting up 20 ppg and 7rpg, the recent Dordt College commit added the All State member, All Tournament Team and Sanford Pentagon/Keloland Players of the year to her already great resume. Gustafson racked up a plenty of award while finishing up her senior year. She has over 1,800 points and won the “Spirit of Sioux” award at State tournament.
Caelyn Valandra-Prue of White River 5’9 (2021) Valandra-Prue has over 1,500 point in only her sophomore year campaign. She led White River to the state tournament for the first time in 27 years, while averaging 24ppg and 5rpg.
Laurie Rogers of Warner 6’1 (2019) Nearly 19 ppg and a shade under 10 rebounds per game, the future Northern State Wolves, was a monster in the paint.
Mattilynn Reiner of Tripp-Delmont/Armour 5’9 (2019) Reiner is an all tool type of player. Not only reach 1,700 point but also eclipsed the 1,000 rebound mark.
Lauren Sees of Avon 5’8 (2019) Sees leaves Avon as the All-Time Leading Scorer. A professional scorer is what we call her, she will play at Augustana University next year.
Kamryn Heinz of Ipswich 5’9 (2019) Coming off a knee injury that sidelined her until December, Heinz lead Ipswich to the state tournament for the first time since the Reagan Administration. She averaged a double double at 19ppg and 10 rpg.
