Just an 8th grader, Abby Maggard established herself as a really good player in the 15th region and set herself up to be one of the best players to come out of the 15th in a long time. During the season, Maggard averaged 8 points and 2 rebounds per game while helping the Lady Jags to a 28-3 record. While her shooting numbers weren’t great for the season, Abby has solidified herself as a top player in the 15th region for the next 4 years.
Abby describes her game as, “A team player that will do whatever my team needs me to do to be successful. I can handle the ball, attack the rim, or shoot the perimeter shot. But I can also create offense for my teammates. I don’t like to blend in, I want to stand out whether it’s me making a tough shot to win a game or making a great pass for my teammate to score.” Just a few weeks ago, Maggard was named Co-MVP of the Camp One Combine and her ability to make all the right plays was a big reason why. While she may be young, Abby already realizes her strengths and where she has to continue to improve, “My strengths on the court is ball handling and shooting. I have been working on improving my defense throughout the year and it has improved. I am constantly working on all aspects of my game.”
Although she had a great high school season, Maggard sees it as a little disappointing. She told me, “My 8th grade season was maybe not as great as I had hoped. I felt that I was more hesitant about shooting the ball. That is something I need to work on. Also I feel that I need to work on getting my shot consistent.” The shooting percentages for the season were not what she was hoping for but Abby is going to make that a prime focus in this offseason. She has chosen not to play AAU this summer. “I decided to get in the gym and work on my body strength, weaknesses, and the rest of my game.” Maggard has some early college interest but is a ways away from it being too serious as she still hasn’t even enrolled in high school yet. For the foreseeable future, Abby just wants to get better, “I want to achieve better body strength and just improving my game in all areas” Already good and only going to get better, Abby Maggard is a name to remember in the 2023 class.
