Continue ReadingLogan County quietly had a tremendous season, including a district championship and regional semifinal birth before falling to Bowling Green. A large part of the Lady Cougars success was Junior Paige Vanzant. Paige is a little off the radar with college coaches but that should change this AAU season as she has proven the ability to score at all three levels and contribute to her team’s rebounding. I recently caught up with the Junior guard to talk about her high school season and her basketball future.
Vanzant described her game to me, “I’m a leader on the court, I try to make plays not only for myself but for my teammates. I drive the lane and look for shots or dish off to post players. If I need to bring it out, I can also shoot from around the arch. On the defensive end, I’m very aggressive and look to get any steal that’s possible. I try to make it hard on whoever I am guarding for them to make turnovers.” She also takes a lot of pride in her defensive abilities, “My strengths on the court are my defensive play and being able to see the court. My ball handling skills are high as well and being able to be quick with the ball is what I’m best at.” Paige does acknowledge her areas for improvement also as she told me that she needs to improve her shot selection and getting her shot off quicker.
Looking back on her high school season, Paige was happy with how things went, “My high school season went well. We made it to the 4th region final four and we were the 13th district champs. Our final record was 22-11. With my individual performance this season, I was rewarded for the 13th district championship MVP, 13th district all season team, 4th region all tournament team, and 4th region all season team. The game that stands out most was against Hopkinsville. I had 34 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals.” Vanzant is looking forward to playing her 17u AAU season with the Southern Kentucky Starz and hoping to see her recruiting get jump started as she is under the radar right now. In the mean time, Paige is looking to raise her scoring averages and free throw shooting next high school season. With her Senior year looming, Paige has set some goals for herself, “I am looking to become a member of the 1,000 point club for my high school next year. Other goals would be to secure a position on a college roster and win region next year.” Paige is a quality prospect that should be on the radar of Kentucky’s colleges and universities. She’ll be a steal for someone this time next year.
