They finished the season 23-2 and added a state runner-up accomplishment to their record. This coming season Wright is going to have to improve on her 12.4 points per game and 5.0 assist per game mark as three of the team’s top six scorers have graduated. She will have sharpshooter senior Kayba Laube (Northern Iowa commit) and fellow junior Ella Van Weelden to pass it off too. This upcoming year should be another solid season for Marion and Wright is going to be a big part of that future success.
Wright is a very versatile player who can play in a lot of different offensive schemes. She has the ability to play off the ball with her handling and vision, but also move off the ball with her cutting and moving ability. The 5’10 wing will most likely move off the ball at the next level, but is the main ball handler for her high school team. She is very fluid with the ball, does not over dribble, and has the ability to penetrate. Her vision and passing ability set her apart from others. Wright takes care of the ball all while being a very dynamic player. Even though she is coming off of a successful high school season, she has a few key things she is woking on this summer.
“I have been working on my shooting range, lots of ball handling, and finishing at the basket with different moves,” Wright said.
Wright shot 27 percent from deep last season and a bump up into the low-to-mid 30s would do her game wonders. With an increased offensive potency, Wright would become even more of a game changer. She does all of the little things that the average fan doesn’t see.
“My strengths are driving to the basket and seeing the open girl or finishing with contact, Wright said. I can also get stops on defensive and rebound well. I think another strength is diving for balls in the ground and run the court well.”
Her performance through her first two years has caught the attention of college coaches already. Running with All Iowa Attack will only help that interest grow. A big summer for Wright could lead to some expanded opportunities. For now Wright has been hearing from some regional low major programs such as Northern Iowa, South Dakota State, and South Dakota. With a good summer you should expect her recruiting to ramp up a little bit. Some bigger programs are likely to come in and start taking a closer look at her game. Even though she is just heading into her junior season, Wright already has three key things she is looking for at a future school.
“I am not looking for a school in any particular location,” Wright said. “I want a school that has good education and is in a safe environment. Also I want a school that is very good in their conference and can compete with a lot of great schools. The top three things I’m looking for though is true style of play, the coaches, and how nice the gym is.”
Wright is already one of the top sophomores in the state. As she works on her game and betters her weaknesses, she will notice that college coaches are looking more intently at her. Her work ethic is already high so the sky is the limit for Wright.
