Continue ReadingOn Sunday, March 31st, we released our updated rankings for the Class of 2020. This class, like any, has its ups and downs, and like the point guard position, there just aren’t many 2-guards throughout the state to choose from as a college recruiter. Again like the point guard position, I feel like there are some really good 2-guards at the top, it’s just a matter of knowing what you are looking for. Below is a look at the Top-25 2-guards in Indiana’s 2020 class, but I’ve decided to do something a little different. Instead of continually evaluating the top five players at each position, I’ve chosen five players who might not normally get as much attention for one reason or another. They might not be on the big stage during the high school season, or they might not play travel ball and draw as many eyes on them, but they are quality prospects who deserve a look.
5. Sydney Jacobsen, 5-8 2G/PG, West Lafayette Harrison H.S.
To me at least, it seems odd to have such a nice player on this list of lesser-knowns, but I feel like Sydney doesn’t have the attention of the state that she probably should. She has never played for a major grassroots program and has always played for her father, which is commendable. She is a strong, tough-nosed, high-motor, and highly skilled combo guard who does most things well. She’s also competitive and wants to win, and she helped Harrison to its most wins (19) in a single season in the 2000s. She averaged 18.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.9 steals, while also burying 62 3-pointers in 24 games. She recently gave a verbal commitment to Division-II power Ashland University. Ashland has been National Champions twice and Runners-Up twice in the last eight years.
7. Reganne Pate, 5-8 2G, Penn H.S.
I’m guessing most of you outside of Northern Indiana aren’t at all familiar with Reganne’s game, and she is sort of that “Did you know?” kid who could be the answer to a couple of trivia questions. As a slender kid, she’s somewhat unassuming, but I assure you Penn’s oppositions know who she is. Reganne was the second leading scorer for a 25-1 Penn team. She is known primarily as a shooter, and that’s because she’s maybe the best in the state at it. She shot 51% from the field, a whopping 52% from 3-point range, and she made 100 3-pointers in just 26 games…that’s nearly four makes per game. She has really good length and moves around the floor fluidly, plus she has a solid handle. In a class short on shooters, look for her interest to skyrocket this Spring because of her unique ability to make shots from the perimeter.
12. Annie Anderson, 5-6 2G/PG, Columbus North H.S.
Annie is sort of ‘Miss Dependable’ for Columbus North. She played close to 28 minutes per game this Winter, so that shows you the trust her coaches have in her. She isn’t an over-aggressive scorer, but she can score when needed, and she has turned herself into a solid-enough perimeter shooter, that she can knock down an open 3-pointer when defenses sag off of her. She has good strength and toughness, she’s a solid on-the-floor athlete, she takes care of the basketball, and she is a willing and capable defensive player. She hasn’t played a full grassroots season since her Freshman year, so that’s likely why colleges are unfamiliar with her at this point. I’m not even sure if she’s interested in college basketball, but she’s a really nice ballplayer who deserves some recognition.
19. Claire Rake, 5-8 2G/PG, Center Grove H.S.
Claire is a versatile combo guard who spent this season trying to help Center Grove in any way she could. With dynamic Senior guards like Ella Thompson and Emma Utterback graduating this Spring, Claire will likely have the first opportunity to step into a leadership role and take on more scoring for the Trojans. She is a wiry strong kid, a solid athlete in all directions, and she plays with a really good motor and toughness. She’s a solid ball-handler and can run offense at times, she’s good driving it to the basket, but she’s also a capable perimeter shooter when open, set, and in rhythm. I also really like how hard she defends, and that could be her ticket to drawing college interest.
24. Hannah Bolton, 5-3 2G/PG, Monroe Central H.S.
Hannah isn’t very big, but she often comes up big on the stat sheet. She is a quick/fast combo guard who can slide over and play point guard, but (1) that is more of her twin sister’s role, and (2) Hannah is such a good shooter/scorer that you want to work to get her open. This season she averaged 16.0 points, 3.6 assists, and 3.1 steals per game, plus a solid 4.2 rebounds per game at her size. She causes problems at the defensive end of the floor with her quickness and her instincts, and I really think if someone can get past her height, she could be a really nice small college point guard with the ability to shoot/score it at a high level.
