Continue ReadingOn Sunday, March 31st, we released our updated rankings for the Class of 2020. This class, like any, has its ups and downs, and the point guard position in 2020 falls under that umbrella, as there just aren’t many point guards throughout the state to choose from as a college recruiter. However, I feel like there are some really good ones at the top, it’s just a matter of knowing what you are looking for. Below is a look at the Top-25 point guards in Indiana’s 2020 class, but I’ve decided to do something a little different. Instead of continually evaluating the top five players at each position, I’ve chosen five players who might not normally get as much attention for one reason or another. They might not be on the big stage during the high school season, or they might not play travel ball and draw as many eyes on them, but they are quality prospects who deserve a look.
7. Darrian Carmean, 5-8 PG, Vincennes Lincoln H.S.
Darrian is a very impressive, multisport athlete, who should be drawing Division-I interest but probably isn’t because she isn’t a grassroots basketball participant. She is long, fluid, and athletic, and she has really done a nice job of transitioning into the Alices’ primary ball-handler over the last couple of seasons. This past Winter, she averaged 15.4 points and an impressive 6.3 assists per game, while also shooting 42% from 3-point range and 86% from the free throw line. She has earned plenty of local recognition, and the IBCA committee thought enough of her to include her on this year’s Junior All-Star team, so hopefully she’ll be able to open some eyes in other parts of the state and in the recruiting world.
8. Bayleigh Runner, 5-7 PG, Hamilton Heights H.S.
Bayleigh sort of waited her turn at Hamilton Heights, and this year she turned into their go-to player during crucial stretches in games. She responded by averaging team highs in points (15.7), rebounds (5.0), assists (3.2), and steals (2.1), while shooting a respectable 35% from 3-point range and a cool 88% from the free throw line. She is a long, wiry strong, fairly athletic guard who can take care of the basketball and run offense, plus she can get a basket whenever her team needs her to. I also like her motor and basketball IQ, and she is someone who should probably draw a combination of Division-I and small college interest throughout the Spring & Summer.
10. Lexie Green, 5-7 PG, Southport H.S.
Lexie was on a lesser-talented Southport team that won just five games this season, and who lost by 20 or more on nine occasions. She has also played grassroots basketball in the past, but never on a primetime team, but this season she’s on the top Team Indiana squad, so hopefully that should help her recruiting. A couple of years ago she was much shorter, much skinnier, and she might still be growing. I’d said she’s pushing 5-8 or 5-9 now, she has some wiry strength, she’s very long, North/South fast, and somewhat bouncy. She definitely has physical talent, but she can also handle it, she’s a solid passer, a good defender, and she can score it at all levels. This Winter she was an 11.6 point per game scorer on a rough team, but she added 9.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.8 steals per game.
17. Molly Ream, 5-6 PG/2G, Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger H.S.
Molly is definitely someone who is lesser-known away from the Fort Wayne area, but she is a tough-nosed kid who battles on every possession. She has a little length, she’s a good athlete in all directions, and she is a willing and capable defender. She can handle it and play point guard, she can hit open shots around the perimeter, but she’s best when she’s attacking and going to the basket. I have only really seen her play for club level grassroots teams in the past, so her visibility has been limited at times, but being on a 17U Always 100 team this season with other kids who I know are drawing college interest should certainly help her recruiting in a big way.
20. Kassidy Dishman, 5-7 PG/2G, Delta H.S.
Kassidy is a multisport athlete who has played grassroots basketball, but it has typically been for a local, Delaware County team, so her college recruiting has been limited to this point. She is a strong and physical combo guard, a nice on-the-floor athlete, and she plays with solid versatility. She can run offense and act as a nice game manager, but she can also attack and score the basketball in the paint. I have seen her score in the 20s on multiple occasions at the high school level, but at times she looks like she’s just trying to “fit in” and doesn’t realize she can take over games more often. I feel like if a small college can tap into her potential and help her become consistently aggressive, she could be a really nice “sleeper” for the next level.
