Friday’s Take Flight Showcase allowed me to see players from different grades from AAU teams in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Over the next several days, I will be highlighting my top performers from the showcase by grade. Today I release the 7 2022 prospects that impressed me the most during pool play. All of these girls stepped up
Jenna Bycznski- SMAC Elite 2022- Berea-Midpark
Jenna came off the bench and provided a spark for this SMAC team in route to their victory on Saturday in Pool play. At 6’3, Jenna is very difficult to defend because of her size and knows how to use her body in the paint against post defenders. I think she has the chance to be a special player if she can work on her finishing abilities as she missed a few easy layups for SMAC.
Catara Dejarnette- SMAC Elite 2022- Kenston
Catara is not the tallest player on the court, but she is one of the hardest working players on the defensive end. A very quick footed guard, Dejarnette moves laterally extremely well and has active hands. This allows her to create turnovers with her ability to get steals against opposing guards. On the offensive end, she possesses great court vision and is always looking to advance the ball, especially in transition.
Mallory Gedeon- Ohio Stars Minnich- Bellbrook
There was not a ton of true post players present on Friday, however Mallory was one of the few that played mostly on the block. Standing about 6’0, she defensively plays up and down extremely well and has the length to disrupt shots. She is pretty athletic for a forward, running the floor with ease. On the offensive end, she still needs to improve on her physicality, especially on the glass as she was beaten for position on rebounds several times.
Sarah Ochs- Dayton Metro-Painter- Carroll
Sarah plays up with mostly juniors on a very talented Dayton Metro team. Defensively she is great on-the-ball and positions herself on the help side to help her teammates. On the offensive end, she does a nice job of getting in the paint on the dribble drive. Her passing ability gave some of her teammates opportunities to knock down shots.
Renee Reilly- SMAC Elite 2022- St. Vincent-St. Mary
One of the strongest players, Renee is extremely physical and was difficult for Dayton Metro-Ballard to box out and contain. Reilly specifically caught my attention on the defensive end as she was able to defend the ball well and keep her opponent in front of her. She does not get beat off the dribble and with her physicality is able to defend 2-4. Offensively, she finishes in traffic but also isn’t afraid to take shots from the perimeter.
J’Asia Scott- Always 100 2022- Northrop
J’Asia was by far one of the best athletes in the 2022 class present on Friday and made plays on both ends of the floor. Defensively, her length makes her a dangerous player capable of creating turnovers on any possession. Her speed and ability to run the floor means she has several opportunities to score in transition. On the offensive end, she can score from all 3 levels which makes her a defensive nightmare. I like her potential in the future.
Julie Williams- Ohio Stars Minnich- Beavercreek
Julie is one of the better ball-handlers that played on Friday. A lightning fast point guard, her crossover is difficult to defend as she has quick change of speed and fast hands. An aggressive player on the drive, Julie gets in the paint and isn’t afraid to make contact in the paint. I think she needs to improve on seeing the floor more as she tends to keep her head down when attacking the rim.
