Being able to take a list like that and choose just five who stood out is always difficult at best, and with regards to the Class of 2020, I saw a lot of what I expected to see out of most of them. With that being said, below is a quick look at five individuals who I felt stood out among the rest based on their play and improvement.
Kaitlyn Davidson, 2020, 5-10 W, Lawrence North H.S.
From the jump, Kaitlyn came out this Spring and looked motivated more than I’ve ever seen her, and that’s saying a lot considering she always plays with a solid motor. She is a strong and physical wing, she can handle it a little and create offense or get to the basket, but what has impressed me the most this Spring has been her ability to make shots consistently in the times I’ve seen her. She has been just as accurate from 3-point range as she has been in the mid-post area. Kaitlyn is a very unique “fit” type of kid, and I think she’ll find a home at a Division-I school where she reminds the Head Coach of someone they’ve had in years past. She’s just too skilled and talented, and way too productive to pass up on for a lot of schools.
Lexie Green, 2020, 5-8 PG, Southport H.S.
I’ve long been a fan of Lexie’s potential/upside, and it’s starting to come full-circle this Spring. She is a long, wiry strong, fluid, and almost smooth point guard prospect. She is best when she’s on the attack downhill, and she’s a nice mid-range shooter and finisher around the basket. She is a fairly tough-nosed kid, willing to be physical, and she looks noticeably stronger, even though she still needs to add more strength. Her perimeter shot has been solid, but that’s an area that could still be just a bit more consistent. I think she’s one of those bubble kids who if she has a great series of games in front of college coaches this Summer, she could see some Division-I offers roll in.
Tamia Perryman, 2020, 5-9 W, Fishers H.S.
In her first Spring on the grassroots circuit, Tamia has absolutely played her tail off, and she’s starting to see the rewards with several colleges closely following her now. She is an athlete, explosive in just about every direction, and she’s bouncy and full of energy. She has good length, wiry strength, and she looks noticeably stronger from a year ago. She is a great slasher to the basket, and she can finish amongst the trees and absorb contact. Her handle is okay, and you aren’t going to just take it from her, but she could work on her change-of-direction ball-handling. She’s also working to become more of a threat from 3-point range. But, she has shown some defensive versatility and tenacity, and she plays with a fearless personality.
Meredith Raley, 2020, 6-0 F, Gibson Southern H.S.
I have been raving about Meredith since we opened Prep Girls Hoops Indiana last September. Meredith is a strong, physical, but mobile forward with a really nice skillset. I was actually sitting with a couple of Division-I schools in Louisville two weekends ago, and they were commenting throughout the game at how versatile she was offensively, able to bring up the ball on occasion, play around the perimeter comfortably, or play in the mid-post or around the block and score it as well. She is a solid on-the-floor athlete, but she’s just so skilled at all levels offensively that it makes her difficult to defend. She plays with a great motor, so if she can show just a little more burst, especially laterally at the defensive end, I think she’ll start seeing her interest pick up a great deal.
Antreese Shelton, 2020, 6-2 F, Penn H.S.
Antreese has been dripping with potential since I first saw her between her 8th Grade and Freshman year. She is extremely long, fluid, and bouncy, and she plays with a youthful energy that is good but can sometimes get her into trouble. She has some ball skill, and she can attack the basket straight-line for scores, plus she has solid vision and can find teammates. She is a nice mid-range shooter, and she has been working on making her perimeter jumper more consistent. She has the chance to develop into a real offensive weapon because of her size and her versatile skillset. I think she can become just as dangerous defensively, because she can block shots and protect the paint, but I almost think you can switch screens with her, as she’s solid defending guards off the dribble. Even though she’s entering her Senior year, she still has a high ceiling and room to grow as a player.
