Arizona Elite Spring Classic: Top Point Guards
In the 22nd annual Arizona Elite Spring Classic, the guard play was on point across the board. A variety of point guards with different playing styles showed off their talents in front of over 100 college coaches. With nearly 100 teams playing, we obviously do not have the opportunity to scout everyone, but here are some of the point guards that we saw play exceptionally well:
2020 5’8 PG Anna Ostlie (Arizona Elite Black) – Physical point guard that can do a little bit of everything. Helped lead her Arizona Elite squad to the championship game with her ability to shoot and pass the ball. She has a good basketball IQ running half court sets, but she can also push the tempo on the break. Anna picked up an offer from UC San Diego following the event and Boise State offered earlier this month.
2020 5’7 PG Jana Van Gytenbeek (Colorado Basketball Club) – The Stanford commit really shined at different moments throughout the event. She had multiple games of 25-30 points, but her court awareness and basketball IQ stood out the most. She scored in transition and hit countless threes when defenders would go under ball screens. She will be playing on the adidas USA Select Team in June. *Feature image
2021 5’8 PG Payton Muma (Colorado Basketball Club) – Another high IQ guard on CBC’s Elite team. She has a thin frame with long limbs, but possesses a quick burst changing directions. Payton showed a next level feel for the game, despite only being a sophomore in high school. A D1 prospect to watch down the road.
2020 5’11 PG Mary Kay Naro (Clutch Players Red) – I was able to scout Naro play in the high school setting this season and once again in this travel event. One consistent for Naro is her ability to facilitate in the half court offense. She can handle pressure and get her team into their half court sets comfortably. She also has good length at the point guard position. Naro has the interest of multiple schools and is in the process of making her college decision.
2019 5’6 PG Alicia Jones (Modesto Magic Teal) – One of the few unsigned seniors in the event, but she showed up and played her game nonetheless! Alicia is very quick with the ball in her hands and can break the defense down off the bounce. She showed off an adequate pull up jumper to balance her ability to get into the paint.
2020 5’7 PG Dayla Ballena (NW Blazers Heat) – Shifty point guard that can see the floor and is a willing passer. Set the tone on defense for her team and was one of the few players in the event to pick up full court man when the rest of her team sagged back into the half court. Division 1 prospect with multiple west coast schools actively recruiting her.
2021 5’6 PG Ashlyn Wallace (NW Blazers Orange) – The starting point guard on the best team in a national event is typically pretty good and this is no exception. Ashlyn found her stroke at different points in the tourney and shot it at a solid rate. She has a handful of Division 1 schools after her talents.
2024 5’5 PG Teagan Colvin (NW Blazers Fierce) – The youngest player in the event showed that she belonged with the high school kids! She has a handle and feel beyond her years at this stage of her career. She can shoot the ball from deep and operate off of high on-ball screens. A player to watch moving forward.
2023 5’9 PG Mjracle Sheppard (NW Blazers Sparks) – Explosive back court player that can really push the tempo in games. She is at her best in the uptempo game, but learning to operate just as well in the court setting. Legitimate Division 1 prospect.
2020 5’9 PG/SG Annelise Dominguez (Team Fusion Elect) – Very confident shooter that can really create her own shot. She held her own offensively with the Blazers Orange team and scored in a variety of ways. She can shoot the deep ball or get to the basket with different moves. Under the radar type prospect with some game!
2020 5’8 PG Alyssa Marin (Troop West Black) – The All-State performer out of California showed off a little bit of everything. She can score with floaters or mid/long range jumpers. It is reported that Alyssa has offers from Eastern Washington, Cal-State Fullerton and more, but she remains uncommitted at this time.
